Clemente Teachers Deepen Understanding of Common Core State Standards

On Saturday, November 15th Clemente teachers worked with David Pook to develop a deeper understanding of the Common Core State Standards in English/Language Arts. David Pook has worked closely with the Council of Chief State Officers in drafting the Core Standards for English Language Arts. In addition, David helped design the PARCC Model Content Frameworks in English/Language Arts. Through the use of School Improvement Grant funds, Principal Sorensen has contracted with him to work with Clemente teachers in order to ensure that students are prepared for the upcoming PARCC exam. Clemente teachers chose to participate on a Saturday in this workshop to deepen their understanding of how to implement the CCSS literacy standards across the curriculum by creating text dependent questions, close readings, and increase text complexity in their daily instruction. Teachers worked in a collaborative setting to create actual close reads that will be used in their next units of instruction. David Pook, who has worked with Clemente throughout the past two years, will return three more times this year to continue this most important work with our teachers. As Clemente seeks authorization this year of the International Baccalaureate program, the seamless integration of CCSS into daily instruction and unit planning is extremely important to ensure that we are preparing our students for college and career success
