Clemente Family Update 9/02/2025

¡Hola todos! Greetings from the 9th grade Spanish teacher Ms. Preston (Profe)!! Students in Spanish 1 are doing an amazing job learning to talk about the calendar, the weather, school activities and class preferences! Students in Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1 have just begun reading their first novel of the year that explores the diverse and complex identities within the U.S. Latino community. The author, Paola Ramos, reports on people who are defining the term Latinx, the nature of Latino identity and the sense of solidarity it creates.

This week, students participated in their first successful fire safety drill. And speaking of safety, all students should now have their new IDs. This is a reminder to make sure they wear it at all times while in the school. Next week we will be rolling out student planners. This is a very useful tool for students to write down their assignments, upcoming quiz/test dates as well as to-do lists for them to use for extracurricular activities and anything else they are interested in keeping track of. Lastly, in an effort to boost student attendance, we will be rolling out attendance incentives this upcoming week so stay tuned to hear more. It has been such a pleasure getting to know all of your students these last two weeks. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at spreston2@cps.edu
10th grade is off to a great start of the 2025-2026 school year!

In science, we are already discussing matter, physical and chemical properties. And doing lots of fun experiments! Hands-on learning is super important and really helps to make sometimes abstract concepts more digestible. This is preparing students for the complexities that we will encounter in Chemistry as the year goes on. Students will become more independent and confident which will allow them to design and lead their own experiments with guidance from the teacher.
The first two weeks of World History class have been off to a great start as students dove into a review of basic geography to build a strong foundation for the year ahead. Through a variety of interactive activities, students have been sharpening their understanding of their cardinal directions, working with world maps, and becoming more familiar with continents, countries, major landmarks, and geographic regions across the globe. This week, students are taking their learning a step further by designing a 7-day travel itinerary to a world destination of their choice. As part of the project, they’re researching and presenting information about major landmarks, traditional foods, local customs, and popular cultural events that tourists might attend. This creative assignment not only allows students to apply their geography skills, but also encourages them to explore global cultures and think critically about what makes a destination historically and culturally significant.
Welcome Back Seniors, Family and Friends to the class of 2026 Information Section!

Academic Updates:

IB DP English II: Hi my name is Ms. Gerke and I teach IB DP English 2. This quarter we are focusing on comparing the ancient Greek play of Medea to the Barbie Movie. We will be working on seeing this through critical lenses and working on prepping for the end of year DP exams. If student purchase their own copy of Medea, they can get extra credit.

English IV: Seniors in English are beginning to look at literary samples of personal narratives in order to identify best practices for writing about themselves. This will develop into personal reflections that students will be able to use to complete college and job applications in the future.

Senior Seminar: Students are beginning to explor college and career options using Schoolinks and O*Net Online. Coming soon, Senior Seminar is going to begin applying for colleges and trade schools. If your student has a social security number, please make sure they know it so they can include it on applications. Many colleges, universities, and trade schools require a student's social security number on applications to make accessing financial aid easier. If you have any questions about this process in Senior Seminar, please contact Mrs. Potter (jtpotter@cps.edu).
Hello, families and students! We are excited that we have already completed Week 2, and learning across the building is happening!

The IB coordinators are excited to be implementing a new tool across the building with our students to continue to develop their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills as high schoolers. Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are essentially the capacities that students need to achieve their learning goals and demonstrate mastery in their classrooms. You can explore more specifics about ATLs and how they are categorized below!
One key focus this year is supporting students in improving their self-management skills, which include skills like bringing materials to class, making short- and long-term plans and tracking due dates and important tasks. To that end, Clemente will be rolling out IB-specific planners for all students! These planners, which are specifically designed for the MYP, DP and CP programs, include ways for students to track homework and long-term projects, reflection and skill development activities, and helpful references. You can see a sample page below.
On Tuesday, September 2nd, students will receive their new planners in their 3rd-period classes. We highly encourage students to ensure that they are present to get their planners and start learning effective techniques for using them.

Families, you can help your student continue to develop good habits by encouraging them to bring their planner to school daily and find ways to use it outside of school as well. Have a family event coming up? Suggest that they add it into their planner! Want them to tackle some chores this weekend? Students can add those chores to their To Do list! If you are interested in more ways to instill self-management routines at home and at school with your student, always feel free to reach out to Ms. Coffey, the DP/CP coordinator, or Ms. Dryjanski, the MYP coordinator.
There has been great work happening in the our arts classes as students become acclimated to working in a studio environment. We are continuing to stress the importance of consistent and mindful participation in all aspects of classes to get the most out of our technical and creative explorations.

We look forward to showing you what we can do!
Q1 Postsecondary Checklist

9th-12th grade:
Schoolinks-taks: This is a graduation requirement that consists of different tasks due every month. Link to SchooLinks for seniors is HERE.

Resume Review: All students MUST come see Ms. Brown or Mr. Austria in room 422 with completing this task as we’ll assist with job applications and possibly job placement.

12th grade:
FAFSA: FSA ID (DUE: Monday, September 29th): Students are to provide evidence of completion, whether it’s a screenshot on their phone or using a snipping tool on their laptops. Seminar teachers (Senior Seminar, TOK, EMBARC, Professional Planning) educators are the only ones we’re asking to assist with this because students need their phones. Link to FSA ID is HERE.

3 College applications are required from CPS to be completed. We’re encouraging all students to apply to at least one trade school and one job. Unless they’re solely pursuing trade school or the workforce, they’re encouraged to apply to more.
