Last week in Cluster we started our Unit on the Science Fair! Our first experiment revolved around our tastebuds and whether chips are salty or sweet! We made our hypothesis, we collected our data and we determined that chips are indeed salty and sweet! Our second experiment involved growing plants and which seed will sprout first! Surprisingly the pinto beans started sprouting first quickly followed by the corn seeds!

This week 10th graders in US History are beginning the constitution unit by looking at the powers assigned to the 3 branches of government. To provide some context we are looking at the conflict currently taking place between the Federal government and the local government over the ICE operations in Chicago and some of the controversial tactics they have used. It’s a perfect illustration of our Federalist system, which disperses power between Federal, State and Local governments, and also highlights some of the unanswered questions in the constitution.

Students are also practicing writing CER paragraphs and arguing a claim effectively by providing evidence.

This year we have the joy of offering DP History in Spanish! It opens up the possibility for more of our student body to access the opportunities that an IB DP education can offer. Our Spanish speaking DP History students have been diving deep into the international response to Japanese aggression and expansion in China and beyond. They’ve been using the key concepts of history, such as change and perspective, to better understand how and why different countries responded the way they did, and the consequences (another key concept!) of those decisions. Students have also been practicing their Paper 1 skills, preparing for the oh-so-anticipated DP exams.
Post-Secondary Updates:
This week began with Report Card Pick-Up where Seniors and Families could meet with Post-Secondary Coaches in the Library. If you need to reach out to Ms. Brown please email jabrown87@cps.edu

DP/CP:
Last week, the DP senior cohort went on an EMBARC trip to Northern Trust where they networked with professionals, asked questions about various aspects of working at a large financial services company, and toured the 125 year old vault! The adults were extremely impressed by our students’ communication skills and the students were intrigued by the office culture.
