In Spanish 1, we are starting our third and final unit of the semester! It is all about the body and health.

Try setting aside a few minutes each day to review new words together, using our already made flashcards or outside apps. Please encourage your students to use their new vocabulary terms daily to reinforce their learning.

Important dates:
12/20: last day before break
1/6: Back from break
1/17: End of semester
It is that time of year! Cold, holidays, snow, and sophomores making it to the finish line. In science classes, we are continuing our learning of atoms with Isotopes & nuclear decay. So so cool! Our students are coming to class with lots of prior knowledge which is fantastic because it lays a great foundation for wonderful discussion and deep thinking. Here is an example of what isotopes are:
The element Oxygen, for example, can exist in multiple ways. Oxygen 16 is what you find on the periodic table, but two other versions, or isotopes, can exist as well. The difference is that the atomic mass changes, 17, or 18, which is due to atoms of Oxygen containing different amounts of neutrons! Who remembers Jimmy Neutron? That’s right! Neutrons are found in the nucleus of atoms.

Happy holidays to all, and don’t forget to breathe in some refreshing Oxygen from time to time.

This week in math, students are working on being able to apply multi-step equations to real world problems. Students have been asked to create word problems and give them to a peer as an assignment. Students have been able to accurately solve more problems when applying real world ideas to math. As we head into the finishing up first semester and moving to the second semester, students will continue to work on practicing ACT style math questions and skills. Students should continue to practice flashcards and practicing doing mental math as we gear up to take the ACT.

English II: Students in Ms. Gerke and Ms. Brooks’s class started their journey with Elie Wiesel’s Night. This book largely centers around one man’s experience in the Holocaust. This week, we read the quote/poem by Martin Niemӧller (“First They Came”) and discussed its connections to both Wiesel’s speech (“The Perils of Indifference”) and the first chapter of Night. Students worked in groups to summarize and synthesize information from the text.
