Clemente Family Update 2/24/2025

Cash Assistance for CPS Families Experiencing Homelessness

Thanks to a partnership between the Illinois Department of Human Services, GiveDirectly, and the University of Chicago’s Inclusive Economy Lab, CPS families who are experiencing housing instability are now eligible to receive up to $6500 in cash assistance.

To be eligible for this financial assistance, families must:
  • Currently be experiencing housing instability or homelessness
  • Have a child who is 17 or younger and enrolled in Chicago Public Schools
  • Have a member of the family receiving SNAP, TANF, or VTTC benefits.
After being selected by lottery, 750 families will receive a $6500 payment, and 750 families will receive $500. Applications are open now, and the deadline to apply is March 9, 2025.

This pilot program aims to understand the impact of this one-time cash assistance pilot on families’ housing stability, as well as its impact on other measures of well-being for the entire family. For more information or to apply, click here, or speak with the STLS liaison at your school.

IB MYP Language & Literature

Freshmen Explore Power and Injustice in Of Mice and Men
Freshmen in IB MYP Language and Literature are currently delving into John Steinbeck's poignant novel, Of Mice and Men. This classic 1937 work explores the struggles of the laboring class, a recurring theme in Steinbeck's writing of that era.

Students are grappling with the essential question: "How does a person's sense of their own power affect the way they behave towards others?" The novel, while focused on a specific time and place, resonates with universal themes of friendship, dreams, and the impact of power dynamics on human relationships.

To deepen their understanding, students are analyzing how these events might unfold in today's world. For example, after encountering an act of injustice within the novel, students creatively expressed their response by designing "wanted posters" for the perpetrator.
This engaging study of Of Mice and Men is fostering critical thinking and insightful discussions among our freshman students.

Shoutout to Ms. Albrect’s class for earning 1st place in the November and December attendance challenge! Keep up the great work, Wildcats–your dedication makes a difference!
Hello Wildcat community!

The 1st semester physical education has come to a close. We engaged in fitness testing, exercising, stretching, team sports, we lifted weights and above all, we broke a mental and physical sweat. Wellness is everyone's responsibility to manage. Exploring and discovering wellness methods plays a vital part in a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of an active lifestyle include living with fewer health issues and health care cost burdens.

Semester 2 we switch gears and start off with Driver Education. This marks a pivotal year for Sophomore students. This exciting new phase can be a bit daunting but with the right attitude and maturity we will grow to become safe successful members of the highway transportation system.

Ready Wildcats!
Green light!

Over the past month, juniors in physics classes have been working on their mastery of using machines in conjunction with Newton’s Laws of Motion. The conclusion of this learning was for students to work together to build a Rube Goldberg Machine (a chain reaction machine) that relied on the laws of physics and machines in order to complete a task accomplished through a series of events. Students had to be able to communicate efficiently with their team members, actively apply their knowledge, and persist in a difficult and frustrating project where one bump could destroy the whole machine. Take a look at some of their designs part-way through.
Dear Parents/Guardians & Students, for those of you reaching out to ask questions about the FAFSA, we are going to direct you to Darlene Sierra-Clark to take your calls and questions.

Post-Secondary coaches, counseling and staff have been contacting families regarding this very important step in senior lives. The FAFSA or equivalent document, is required for graduation from Chicago Public Schools for all seniors. We have been working with seniors since October to give them information about the FSA I.D. and the FAFSA.

What is an FSA ID?
The FSA ID is a username and password you use to log into certain U.S. Department of Education websites including fafsa.gov and StudentAid.gov. The FSA ID if your legal signature and should’t be created or used by anyone other than you - not even your parent, your child, a school official, or a loan company representative. You’ll use your FSA ID every year you fill out a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) form and for the lifetime of your federal student loans.

How do I get an FSA ID?
Visit Studentaid.gov/fsaid to create an FSA ID. You’ll need your social security number, full name, and date of your birth. You’ll also need to create a memorable username and password, and provide answers to some challenge questions so you can retrieve your account information if you forget it.

We strongly recommend that you provide a mobile phone number and personal email address when you make your FSA ID. Providing a mobile phone number and/or email address that you have access to will make it easier to unlock your account, retrieve your forgotten username, or reset your forgotten password.

IMPORTANT: An email address and mobile phone number cannot be used with more than 1 FSA ID. If you share an email address with someone else, then only one of you will be able to use that email address to create an FSA ID. This applies to your mobile phone number too.

FSA ID Tips:
  • One of your parents might need an FSA ID as well. If you need to provide information about your parents on the FAFSA form, one of your parents will have to sign the form. Your parent can create an FSA ID and then sign the FAFSA form electronically using that FSA ID. Not sure whether you’ll need to put the parent’s information on the FAFSA form? Check out studentAid.gov/dependency. Remember: You should create your own FSA ID and your parent should create his or her own FSA ID. Also, make sure to use the correct FSA ID when signing the FAFSA form electronically.
  • When you first create your FSA ID, all you’ll be able to use your FSA ID for is to complete, sign, and submit an original (first-time) FAFSA form. You’ll have to wait 1-3 days for your information to be confirmed by the SOcial Security Administration (SSA) before you can use your FSA ID for other actions such as submitting a Renewal FAFSA form or signing a Master Promissory Note. If you provided an email address, then you’ll receive an email letting you know that your information was successfully matched with the SSA and you can use your FSA ID for all of its purposes.
  • If you forgot your FSA ID, username and password, look for links, such as “Forgot my Username” and “Forgot my Password” at the log-in pages of the websites. These links will direct you to web pages where you can request a secure code to be texted to your verified mobile phone number or emailed to your verified email address. The secure code will allow you to retrieve your username or reset your password. You can also retrieve your username or reset your password by successfully answering your challenge questions.

END OF SEMESTER 1
Seniors are finishing their finals and all grades are submitted by teacher on Friday January 17.
Seniors should have reached out to their teachers about any missing work, attended the tutoring sessions that have been offered during lunch on the 6th floor with Ms. Smith, to receive help with classwork.

Seniors who are missing graduation requirements or classes they need for graduation, will be scheduled to meet with counselors, who will meet with students soon after the semester ends to make plans for any credit recovery. These are specific to each student’s circumstances. If parents/guardians have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Ellis or Ms. Archibald (Counseling staff) with questions about graduation requirements.
