This year in Structured Literacy we began the year with the WIST assessment. We have just started on our Unit 1 on understanding the creation of the English Language. We traveled back over 8800 years to view what is believed to be the first form of written communication (which was found preserved on a tortoise shell!)
We have also begun to learn about Logograms and logographic writing systems, including the Chinese writing system and even ancient Hieroglyphics. Utilizing hieroglyphics, we have begun to understand how each symbol within the language is associated with a sound and how that was utilized in the creation of the English language as we know it.

Hi Sophomores, Parents and Guardians!
Sophomores are in full swing in English class with Ms. Gerke and Ms. Brooks where they are learning how authors use ethos, pathos and logos, three persuasion techniques, to convince an audience to believe something. This week the students will begin listening to a podcast called Serial to dive into this work and determine if the main character is guilty of a crime.
This week in World History, students were developing their ability to measure time and space by constructing timelines that cover human societal history. This included learning about how human societies developed across different eras, such as the Prehistoric Era, the Ancient Era, the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Era, and the Modern Era. Students learned about how technology has helped these different societal eras adapt to their environment. This helps students understand where they are in the greater scheme of human history, develops their intuition for time, and helps them to be thankful for who came before them.

Next week, sophomores will begin their Personal Project journey! In History classes, students will learn more about the project requirements, draft their initial proposal and provide their preferences for mentors.
Families, help support your student by asking them what they are considering for their topic!
