This week in 9th grade ESL classes students finished dialogues demonstrating their understanding of the difference between “have” and “have to” in context. This week students will also be learning names for the different parts of the body and applying that knowledge in a lesson I like to call “monster factory,” where students will be implementing body part knowledge in order to design a corresponding creature.

In 9th grade Communications, students received their state assignments for their upcoming “States of the United States Project” where students will research one of the 50 US states, create a presentation highlighting key aspects of their chosen state, and present the presentation completely in English. Lots of excitement in the air!

Unit 1 Fitness Testing and Team building has wrapped up and students have proven they can design a fitness plan for anyone based on their fitness scores. We are now in week 2 of Unit 2 Flexibility. In this unit students develop their flexibility levels, increase their mental health and find their calm.
Soothing music is played while students are lead by Mr. Tolene. Poses like warrior 1, warrior 2 and warrior 3, tree pose, prone boat, and the scorpion tail introduce a range of motion that comes with proven health benefits! This particular unit focuses on the breath while stretching creating a union between mind and body. The final exam consists of a complete 10 step sequence called the Sun Salutation.

This week, junior physics students are delving into the principles of acceleration and gravitational acceleration, applying established kinematic equations to determine unknown variables within various motion scenarios. Through guided inquiry and problem-solving exercises, students have come to understand that all objects within Earth’s atmosphere experience the same constant acceleration due to gravity, regardless of mass—a realization that effectively discredits the long-held misconception that heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones. By engaging in both conceptual analysis and quantitative reasoning, students are deepening their comprehension of how forces influence motion.
The week will conclude with a comprehensive review of motion and acceleration, preparing students for forthcoming formative and summative assessments that will evaluate their mastery of these foundational mechanics concepts.

Congrats on finishing off the first quarter of SY26! Now is the perfect time to connect with your teachers and DP mentor (if you elected to have a mentor) about your grades, classes, and workload. If you’re struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Coordinator, Ms. Coffey at ccoffey2@cps.edu
Juniors: Remember, the Pre-ACT is on Tues October 1st. This is a great opportunity to experience this standardized test before the Spring and college applications. The best way to prepare is to get good sleep and bring your A game so you have a realistic vision of where you need to improve before the spring exam.
All DP and CP cohort students: This week, we opened the IB Lounge for lunch as a place for students to recharge, study, and connect with the IB community. Please retrieve a pass from Ms. Coffey.
