This week in Mr. Hernandez’s Math I class, students continued to work on trying to solve inequalities and how they are related to solving equations. We introduced the topic last week and this week we started to look at some real life applications through the use of word problems. Students got to read a word problem and pull out useful information in order to solve what the question is asking. They also were asked to create inequalities based on the information they have pulled out. This helped students analyze what they needed to do based on what units the question needed.
Later in the week we also looked at the possibility of not having a solution as an answer and what that may look like on a number line. We also started to see the difference between compound inequalities and how different those solutions can be. As we wrap up inequalities, we will look ahead at dealing with various units and how they are useful in other subjects and in the real world

Last week in chemistry with Mrs. Charles students completed their first unit summative design lab. Students worked collaboratively to determine how the density of a liquid of their choice resulted in its floating or sinking in water. The assignment required students to demonstrate all of their skills from unit 1 which included identifying variables, following lab safety protocol, designing data tables, calculating data, and writing conclusions with correct scientific reasoning.

SENIOR SEMINAR: Students are working on personal statements for scholarships, college applications or employment. They have been setting up meetings with the post-secondary coach Ms. Brown, and making plans for their post-secondary options. Students should have applied to 3 colleges or trade programs by 10/21, and sent confirmation of the applications to their teachers (screenshot or other evidence). The post-secondary Coach Ms. Brown has been coming to Seminar classes to touch base with students, and the counselor Ms. Ellis has also provided copies of transcripts to students and discussed on-track and off-track classes.
ENGLISH IV: Students have been working on personal statements in Seminar and have had opportunities to meet with teachers for revisions and 1 on 1 meetings in English class and during lunch in the library. For more assistance reach out to staff.
SENIOR GOOGLE CLASSROOM: The Senior Board on Google Classroom is a space where staff connects students with information and opportunities, such as multiple college fairs, trips, surveys and other items. To keep up to date, students and connected parents can check out what’s happening. If you need access, please reach out to Clemente to connect the parent account to the student account on Aspen, and have access to information being posted about events.
SENIOR CONTRACT: 80% of the seniors have turned in their senior contract. As a reminder, unsigned contracts may inhibit students from attending field trips, incentives or events. See Dean Preston for a copy of the contract. The contract has been given out on 3 occasions this year. Students were sent an email individually if they have not turned one in.
