My name is Mr. Spooner, and I am a civics teacher and the freshman grade level lead. This week, the freshman team is welcoming the class of 2029 to Clemente High School! This week, students got to know each other, their teachers, and what it means to be at an IB school. In addition to the vital information, such as safety protocols and technology guidelines, students have been engaging with the IB Learning Profile, a set of traits that helps students become lifelong learners and engaged citizens. Learn more about the benefits of attending an IB school here, in the presentation from our coordinator, Ms. Dryjanski! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (ejspooner@cps.edu) or Ms. Dryjanski (gdryjanski@cps.edu) if you have any questions!

Students received their most important resource this week: their computers! Parents, please remind your child that bringing their laptop and charger to school every day is a must! Many classes will utilize computers every day, and forgetting these materials could result in the student falling behind in their coursework. We are so excited to work with this group of students this year. We can already tell they are going to do great things!

Physical Health Education
Hello Wildcat community! Mr. Tolene here,
- School is back in session and the physical education department is ready. We will be engaging in fitness testing, exercising, and team building for Unit 1. On Wednesdays students will spend time getting fit in the weightroom which has new equipment for students to use.
- Since Clemente high school is an IB school students are expected to break a mental and physical sweat. Students will finish the year physically stronger, with enhanced goal setting skills, and better self management ability.
- Exploring wellness methods and interests plays a vital part in a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of an active lifestyle include living with fewer health issues and health care cost burdens.

Class of 2028, Here we go!
Here’s an article study from the Mayo Clinic:
For Week 1, we started World History by exploring the importance of maps and communicating information using conventional map skills such as identifying locations, coloring territory, using a scale to calculate distances, and cardinal directions. These tasks help students gain a sense of direction, size, and scale so that they can navigate the world around them and perform important tasks like planning trips, estimating commute times and distances, and build an intuition for spatial awareness.
Students were given rules, such as never coloring bordering countries with the same color, creating a key to communicate map features, and how to use a ruler. The maps they used were world maps, globe maps, and solar system diagrams.

English IV: Welcome back to school everyone! My name is Mr. Saigh. English IV started out the year by studying “profit vs. non for profit” trade schools, specifically focusing on cosmetology schools in Chicago, and whether the costs of these programs pay off in the long run. This is to support seniors as they begin researching pathways in Senior Seminar and in SchooLinks. We will begin writing and analysis soon!

Senior Seminar: Hi, my name is Ms. Potter and I teach Senior Seminar. Senior Seminar is a class that assists students in planning which path they want to take after high school. Some of the topics include: resume’s, personal statements, college applications, trade-school exploration, financial literacy, FAFSA, and more. Coming soon, Senior Seminar is going to begin applying for colleges and trade schools within the next few weeks. If your student has a social security number, please make sure they know it so they can include it on applications. Many colleges, universities, and trade schools require student's social security numbers on applications to make accessing financial aid easier. If you have any questions about this process in Senior Seminar, please contact Mrs. Potter (jtpotter@cps.edu).

We hope you the first week of school exceeded your expectations and you’re ready for a great year together.

Q1 Postsecondary Checklist
Schoolinks-taks: This is a graduation requirement that consists of different tasks due every month. Link to SchooLinks for seniors is HERE
Resume Review: All students MUST come see Ms. Brown or Mr. Austria in room 422 with completing this task as we’ll assist with job applications and possibly job placement.
FAFSA: FSA ID (DUE: Monday, September 29th): Students are to provide evidence of completion, whether it’s a screenshot on their phone or using a snipping tool on their laptops. Seminar teachers (Senior Seminar, TOK, EMBARC, Professional Planning) educators are the only ones we’re asking to assist with this because students need their phones. FAFSA for parents at Saturday FAFSA workshops. Link to FSA. I.D. is HERE. Both parent and student must have their own account.

3 College applications are required from CPS to be completed. We’re encouraging all students to apply to at least one trade school and one job. Unless they’re solely pursuing trade school or the workforce, they’re encouraged to apply to more.
