Option to Keep or Return Your School Laptop for Summer

Dear Freshmen, Sophomores & Juniors,

As we wrap up the school year, we want to remind you that you have the option to keep your school-issued laptop over the summer. If you prefer to return your device and have it reassigned to you at the start of next school year, we’re happy to accommodate that as well.

Students in grades 9-11 may begin returning devices after completing all coursework and final exams. If you choose to return your device, please ensure that it is in good condition and includes the charger.

This week, in Ms. Dryjanski’s Biology class, students zoomed in from learning about the cell and its structures to looking more closely at DNA. They explored the controversial discovery of DNA and looked at the science drama between Watson & Crick and Rosalind Franklin, an often overlooked contributor to the discovery of DNA’s notable double helix shape. Students then jumped into exploring that structure of DNA by learning about what DNA is composed of and figuring out how the complementary base pairs go together. The freshmen learned about Chargaff’s Rule, which dictates that there will be equal numbers of adenine (A) and guanine (G), as well as cytosine (C) and thymine (T). This has allowed students to become experts at applying Chargaff’s rule!

They further applied this learning by creating DNA models out of candy. 9th graders had to select different materials to represent the various parts of a DNA double helix and apply Chargaff’s Rule to make sure their gum drop bases were complementary, matching up correctly, while representing all the parts of DNA. Students will continue to learn more about DNA by jumping into DNA replication and moving into an exploration of heredity to finish the year.
Senior grades will be submitted by staff on Friday May 30th by 5pm. Seniors please meet with teachers to complete any missing items needed for graduation. Service Learning
Seniors completed service learning in honor of Earth Day. Alderman Daniel La Spata of the 1st ward sponsored the clean-up materials, thank you! Students went to Humboldt Park and cleaned up trash and between Division street and North Avenue! They really had fun seeing how they could make a difference!
Drama & Theatre
Congratulations to all students who performed in this year’s production of “Clue” produced by Ms. Gerke. Students attended many after-school rehearsals, attended to stage set-up, design, and production roles with great success! We are proud of all our actors and supporting roles! It was amazing! Thank you to parents, friends, family, staff and students who came out for the shows!
