Mrs. Charles’ and Mrs. Calderon’s chemistry recently finished their unit on bonding and chemical reactions. The classes engaged in multiple labs to analyze chemical reactions. Students had the opportunity to show off their skills in balancing equations and identifying different types of reactions.
Our unit culminated in a challenging lab summative assessment. In this assignment students were given the role of chemist at a company that had been tasked with designing a cold pack. By working in teams, students selected the ionic compound and liquid they wanted to react in their “cold pack” and determined their own experimental controls and procedure. As if they were real employees, students had to effectively communicate and hold each other accountable to meet certain deadlines. Our students rose to the challenge to meet these high expectations and we are extremely proud of their work!

When will I ever use this? If I had a nickel for every time I had a student ask me this question, I would be a millionaire. Yet, behind this curious simple 6-word question lies the eternal struggle of every math teacher, not only at Clemente, but around the world, and that is: How can we make math real for students? Well, there is no simple answer to this, but one way it can be done is by exposing students to authentic real-world scenarios in which the math they are learning can be applied to solve real problems.
Now, this doesn’t have to be some far-fetched scenario, like explaining quantum dynamics (although it could be), rather it can be as simple as asking students to build a box, from a single 4x6 notecard, that can hold the most M&M’s or to design a 3D-Solid from objects around them and calculate their dimensions using existing formulae. This is exactly what Clemente Math students were asked to do. These simple yet intriguing tasks helped them to combine abstract/conceptual ideas from calculus and geometry and use them to solve concrete real world problems. Check out some of the fun they had in the pictures below.
