This week on the 9th grade team, Mr. Campbell’s class of newcomers learned how to say simple present sentences with “To Be” such as “I am not bored” and “You are happy.” Later in the week, students learned how to say if they “like” to do something. At the start of each class this week, students have been taking notes on useful conversational phrases that they will be able to use to construct their own dialogues in the English language. Students completed group posters from last week using vocabulary to describe the time of day such as morning, afternoon, sunset, and midnight. Students additionally learned over 30 different vocabulary words to describe how they are feeling on a day-to-day basis.

9th graders all around Clemente HS, both native English and Spanish speakers, are eagerly utilizing the unique opportunity Clemente affords for bilingual immersion, learning the grammatical structures; vocabulary; and pronunciations they need to converse in another language. Encourage your children to participate in all the numerous extracurricular activities that Clemente extends not just for fun and social reasons, but also for the immensely valuable skill of acquiring a 2nd language!

In Physical Health Education Sophomores are discovering where they stand with their current fitness levels. Students test their upper body, core, flexibility, and aerobic fitness levels and record their data. Their levels are put up against IL Shape America fitness standards. Once their fitness data is collected students create a data based fitness goal to work towards for the year. Being part of an International Baccalaureate school asks students to break a physical sweat as well as a mental sweat. When class is not in the gymnasium developing their wellness or analyzing data answering questions they are in the weight room working out.
Along with fitness testing students are participating in team building cardio games that develop their fitness and their social skills. Games like life boat, Ultimate Frisbee, and flicker ball center around working as one unit to accomplish a goal. Communication skills, critical listening are vital parts of a successful future after high school.
Now that Unit 1 is wrapping up students will transition to Unit 2 Beginner Yoga. This approach to wellness differs from usual PE activities as it is an independent performance whereas most activities are team based. CPS guidance advises lifelong wellness activities and exercise routines like yoga definitely fulfill this path to health.

This week in Mr. Vazquez’s English III class, students are beginning to dissect the play Fences by August Wilson. The main focus for this unit is centered around the question: what does it take to become a role model? Students have begun to explore the setting of this play as understanding the time and the place is imperative for making commentary about the characters in the story.
This week in Mr. Vazquez’s DP Language and Literature I class, students are culminating their work surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. In dissecting this text, students are beginning to understand the nature of textual analysis in this course. As the main priority, students have been learning and practicing structured writing up to the point where they produced a MIELCon-style response this past Friday in relation to the song “Mirror”, which serves as the final song on Lamar’s album. Across the year, students will continue to practice writing structured responses as a means of ordering arguments, ideas, and overall analysis. Within this course, students will also open their minds up to new ways to interpret conventional literature (novels, poetry) as well as other various forms such as lyric, graphic novel, film, and everything else in between.
