Clemente Family Update 3/18/2020 - College & Career Support for High School Students

College & Career Support for High School Students

The Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising at Chicago Public Schools is committed to supporting students and families through goal setting and taking concrete steps towards making a reality a plan for life after high school.

In addition to School Counselors and Postsecondary Coaches at each high school, we have assembled a terrific team of College and Career Specialists to ensure that students and families are supported through each step of completing applications and other processes related to college, military, employment, apprenticeships, job training options, gap year programs or any other option a student wishes to pursue after high school graduation. The team can also help students and families navigate financial aid processes, including FAFSA, IL Alternative Application, and private scholarships

We hope that you will utilize the College and Career Specialists fully as resources and supports.
  • Who can students and families e-mail with questions about Learn.Plan.Succeed. and other college and career planning and application issues?
Contact the student’s school counselor. If a school counselor cannot be reached, send questions to LearnPlanSucceed@cps.edu or complete the LPS Help Desk form. The team of College and Career Specialists at CPS Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising is available to answer questions about applications, resumes, financial aid processes, scholarships, and other processes related to getting ready for life after high school graduation.
  • Who can students and families call with questions about Learn.Plan.Succeed. and other college and career planning and application issues?
Contact the student’s school counselor or postsecondary coach. If a school counselor or coach cannot be reached, a College and Career Specialist is available to answer student and family questions. For a directory by school, click here. Phones will be open Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM.
  • How can students request an official high school transcript?
School counselors will be teleworking to remain in touch with students. Students should continue to submit transcript requests electronically via Naviance along with a follow-up email to their school counselor. If in 48 hours a school counselor has not responded, students may submit a transcript request to CPS Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising at oscpa-pd@cps.edu or complete the LPS Help Desk form.
  • Where can Grade 12 students save evidence of their Learn.Plan.Succeed. plan for life after high school?
To ensure that school counselors and postsecondary coaches at each school and CPS College and Career Specialists are able to best assist grade 12 students and families with completing their Learn.Plan.Succeed. plan, refer to Naviance – the official college and career readiness platform used at Chicago Public Schools.
In this Naviance activity grade 12 students will answer 4 questions. They will be asked to declare the pathway that best describes their plan for life beyond high school.
In support of each grade 12 student’s Learn.Plan.Succeed. plan, in this Naviance activity students will be prompted to upload evidence of what they plan to do next year. Evidence of a concrete postsecondary plan must be loaded to Naviance no later than May 31, 2020.
  • My student is undecided or not sure what pathway to pursue after high school. How can a student start planning for life beyond high school?
It’s never too early—or too late—to explore postsecondary options! Students will have to take time to research and understand their options, but they don’t have to do it alone. Students can contact their School Counselor or Postsecondary Coach at their high school, or a College and Career Specialist in the CPS Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising is available to help break down the processes and to make it easier for students.
Additionally, all students at Chicago Public Schools can use the Learn.Plan.Succeed. Website at CPS.edu/LearnPlanSucceed to explore a variety of options for life after high school, including:
Using their CPS username and password, students can log into Naviance to get started:
    • Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) – Each student’s Individual Learning Plan is made up of activities that are intended to help in defining long-term career goals and immediate plans for life beyond high school. It can inform decisions about courses and activities throughout high school.
    • Career Interest Profiler - This tool is a survey that can help students discover the types of work activities and careers that match their interests. When choosing answers, students are prompted to consider whether they might enjoy or dislike a particular work activity. Based on student responses, the “Career Interest Profiler” will rank the top three interests and provide each student with a list of occupations that are a match.
    • Career Cluster Finder - This is a tool that will match student interests and personal qualities to careers. The more information students have about where their strengths lie, and what their interests are, the more each student can make informed decisions about courses, activities, and eventually career interests that they might want to pursue in future.
    • SuperMatch - This is a college search tool that assists students in exploring and discovering colleges that are a fit with what they are looking for in a college experience and provides a list of colleges that are a match with their academic profile.
