In English II we are continuing to read Bodega Dreams, a story about Chino, a man trying to provide for his family who gets caught up in Willie Bodega's dream to change the Spanish Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Students are building their communication and collaboration skills as they work together in teams to deconstruct the plot and characters' relationships and motivations. We are about halfway through the book. As we move towards the end of the book, we are beginning to prepare for our Unit 2 summative assessment which will be due at the end of the month.

In Physical Education II it is not enough to break just a physical sweat. Students are breaking a mental sweat too. Students are building their understanding of self care by reading articles like, "Self-Care for Teens: A Boon for Mental Health." In this reading by author Raychelle Cassada Lohmann, classes review establishing healthy eating habits, the transformative benefits of exercise and the impact of proper sleep. Apart from analyzing text, Mr. Tolene leads discussions on how we come to learn about our wellness, asking why do we choose what we eat and what we stay away from? How much value do we really put on exercise in our daily life? As this semester comes to a close students will be phasing out of wellness content and phasing in to the classroom portion of Drivers Education! See you on the road Wildcats!

The senior grade level team has been meeting to secure dates for the following: Picture Week, Prom, and Graduation. We hear you and understand that everyone really wants to know when and where these are, but rest assured that as soon as it is confirmed, we will release the venues and dates. Please be on the lookout for that in the next couple weeks. We are also in a heavy push to have the FAFSA completed, as this is a graduation requirement by the State of Illinois. Please see Mark Crawley if you have any questions.

Tentative Dates (Not confirmed yet, but will be around that time)

- Senior Pictures (Confirmed) → March 24th and 25th. (We will notify you in a couple weeks which day you will have)
- Prom → Middle of May, Downtown. (We are working on the venue)
- CPS 6 Flags Senior Night → Friday June 3rd. Tickets are $40. This is a Senior-only CPS event with chaperones.
- Graduation → the first week in June (LSC has to confirm the choice. Their next meeting is February 17th)

- Finish on your product! Your item that you are making, whatever it is, is due in two weeks on January 31st!
- The Personal Project Fair will now be on February 9th!
- Need materials but not sure where to get them? Please send me an email at gdryjanski@cps.edu OR connect with your mentor for help.
- Catch up on missing items! Check the Sophomore Google Classroom to see what you have turned in and what you are missing!
- Be sure to look at your process journals! You should be finished all the way through Journal #6 by January 20th.
- Meet with your mentor as soon as you can. Remember, these three meetings are required and should help you figure out any questions you have.

Our semester is quickly coming to an end. Teachers must report grades by January 28th. However, you can expect your student's teachers to have final due dates before this date. This allows teachers the time to accurately report grades.

For freshmen, sophomore, fine arts, and JROTC students, parents/guardians: Once again, here are the credentials to log into JumpRope.

There has been an update in JumpRope! Our missing code will shift from E to M. This ensures there is less confusion!

Lastly, a conversion chart has been entered at the top of the Current Grades tab. Now, when you see a number next to your student's class, you can have an idea of what letter grade the number corresponds to.
|
If you notice that there is no grade next to a class or if you are confused in any way about the number or letter, please email the teacher directly (by clicking on the blue envelope next to the course's name on the Current Grades tab) or reaching out to mmybarra@cps.edu.

Please note that as students progress in the curriculum, their letter grades can dramatically shift after they show progress in the different competencies.
