Currently, in English I, students are closing in on the ending of Romeo and Juliet. While completing a close read on every act of the play, students are getting ready to begin developing their summative assessment which will be both focusing on argumentative writing and a verbal presentation. The end goal of this unit is for students to understand different perspectives of the story, while taking a closer look at the author's intent by reviewing the author's tone, style, and word choice.

This week, 10th grade Social Studies students had a field trip brought to them! The Mobile Museum of Tolerance (a part of the Simon Wiesenthal Center) parked just outside our front doors, and students entered to participate in a mini-lesson about the civil rights movement. Students spoke about aspects of their identity, and then watched a short film with clips from civil rights heroes, including Dr. Martin Luther King, John Lewis, and Jimmy Webb. Then, students had an opportunity to reflect and create a plan for how they can help to end racism, sexism, and intolerance in their communities. The Social Studies team hopes to bring more unique opportunities like this to Clemente before the school year ends.

Junior News
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend, Wildcats! We are a little over a month away from the SAT that all Juniors take, so now is the time to buckle down academically and push yourself to practice those skills assessed in and outside of the Classroom. There are lots of great online resources available for SAT practice like Khan Academy. Check out the photos and blurb below to see what the DP1 Language and Literature classes have been up to.

Recently, Ms. Coffey’s DP1 Language and Literature classes attended a field trip to The Oriental Institute Museum on the campus of University of Chicago in Hyde Park. At the museum we learned all about the history of present-day Iran in preparation to read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Students also had the chance to explore artifacts, art, and treasures from ancient ancient cultures dating back over 2,000 years ago. Although we were not able to take a formal tour of the campus due to COVID restrictions, we did walk through the main quad of the prestigious college and met virtually with an admissions representative from University of Chicago the following week.

Hello class of 2022! This week we should be learning the outcome of the LSC decision about graduation venue and date, so be on the lookout for that in the next week or two as that gets finalized.

We had a great Senior Fun Day! Thank you to all of the staff and teachers who helped make that happen, but also for students who were attending classes and getting the FAFSA and College Applications submitted! We appreciate you! Be on the lookout for the next event! (Thanks to Chef G, Luis S, Gavzer, Townhouse, et al who helped to make this a success!)

Thank you to Ms. Potter, Chef G, and students who volunteered for the Rose Event on Monday Feb 14th, and thank you to those who purchased Roses to send to the people you care about! Can you feel the love?

Please make sure you check out the Clemente website (Http://rccachicago.org) for information about senior pictures on March 24 and 25 (scroll down to see the events on the website). IB News
Last week, our sophomores celebrated their achievements in the Personal Project Fair! Students were able to show off all their hard work and exhibit their products that they had been planning for since October! Freshmen students, staff and special guests were able to join the sophomores and hear more about their hard work. The sophomore team is super proud of what students have accomplished this year! Families, check out some featured projects from this year’s Personal Project Fair in this video.

So what is left? The last piece of the Personal Project journey is the final paper! Students will consider their planning process, determine skills they used and reflect on the experience as a whole in this component of the project. It is essential that all sophomores turn this paper in because it is a requirement for participation in the Half Cap celebration in June! Additionally, if you participated in the Personal Project Fair, completing the paper is the last box to check to join us on the field trip in April! Let’s get it done!

For sophomores who have started in I&S classes this week, be sure to continue working on your paper in the Sophomore GL Google Classroom. If you haven’t had a visit from Ms. Dryjanski yet, she will be in your classes next week.

Important Dates
  • Personal Project Study Hall #2: March 7th during 7th period
  • Personal Project final paper due: March 8th
