Debate Tournament

Clemente senior IB DP students complete in debate tournament in Mr. Hoover's class. For the debate, each group focused on a specific presidential election ranging from the late 1940s to the 1980s. Each group had to explain why their election was more impactful than the other. The purpose of this debate was to distinguish the impact the election had on the world and how It could potentially impact the world today. The bracket was seeded like an actual tournament. Each group selected a number that indicated their respective seeding. After the conclusion of the drawing, the groups began to debate. Everyone in the class had two days to prepare for their debate.

GL Updates - As we enter the month of March, it is vitally important that students are staying motivated in the long stretch of time before spring break. This includes attending school DAILY and attending all classes. During this month, students will be focusing on preparing themselves for taking the PSAT through Khan Academy practice and goal setting. Ensuring student's success on this exam means long term success on the SAT when they take in during their Junior year. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Freshman grade level lead (Anna Ziemniak) via email aziemniak@cps.edu.

English (Mrs. Ziemniak, Mr. Andresen, Ms. Potter and Mr. McCormack) - We finished our poetry unit, which culminated with students creating portfolios of their original poetry. Ask your student if they would be willing to share their final product with you as many of them worked extremely hard in designing and revising their work. This week, we are starting our Odyssey unit, which will be heavily focused on discussion practices. We hope to examine in this unit the ways in which modern hero stories, such as comic books and other epic fantasy stories, have used the structure and form of The Odyssey as a reflection of the human experience. Students will be given more homework in this unit than they have had in the past units. It will be important for their sustained success that they complete ALL their homework to prepare for class discussions and more.

Math (Ms. Delgado, Ms. Rombough, Mr. Huerta) - In Math 1, we are wrapping up Unit 3 this week. In Unit 3 we covered graphing 7 different functions, which includes linear, direct variation and inverse variation, quadratic, cubic, square root, and absolute value. Students can graph functions given an equation by creating a table and plotting points on a given graph. Next Unit, we will be covering Systems of Equations. As we move into a new increasingly challenging curriculum, students are welcome to attend lunch and after school tutoring to continue to strengthen their understanding of Math I and students can take mastery quizzes as many times as necessary to improve grades. Encourage your student to continue to strengthen their knowledge by using these resources.

Biology (Mr. Holmes, Ms. Brinkers, Mr. Douglas) - Instructional BIO with (Douglas) will be preparing for the DNA Extraction Lab starting 3/10. In Ms. Brinkers' and Mr. Holmes' classes, students have been working hard to learn about DNA and discuss the pros and cons of genetic engineering. This week, they are beginning to make predictions using punnett squares before finally moving on to study protein synthesis and genetic mutations. Ask your student about what they're learning and have a discussion about their genetic traits!

JROTC (SGT Lewis) - Hello everyone from JROTC. Spring is in the air and soon it will be summer. But we are not there yet. We need to focus on keeping our grades up by wearing our uniforms on Wednesdays and turning in our work on time. As stated at the beginning of the year and at the semester, grades can be made up for an improved grade. Attendance is a real concern many of our students are coming in late or missing multiple days out of school. This greatly impacts their grades. This is a busy time of year let's stay focused.

PE (Ms. Diaz) - The freshmen class in Health have been working in unit 3 MyPlate which covers nutrition. They learned how to read a food label. This then helped them create their own two day food log. In their food log they had to count calories and sodium intake. We then discussed MyPlate which covered the 5 food groups and their nutrition values. What a healthy snack looks like compared to an unhealthy snack etc... We just need to keep staying strong, come to class on time and prepare to finish strong.

Spanish (Mr. Addison and Mr. Acosta) - ¡Hola a todos!

In Spanish 1, we are mid-unit on La casa y la familia. Students just wrapped up a short book describing their daily routine, and are ready to move on to family members.

En la clase de herencia, estamos aprendiendo sobre la propaganda y los efectos en la sociedad. Los estudiantes se acabaron con sus propios anuncios de propaganda.

Music (Ms. Busch) - Hello music students! You've been working really hard on learning piano! We need you to maintain good practice habits and in keeping organized. Many of you are tardy to class each day, and this affects your learning. As you know, assistance is available, and yes, even music has tutoring. So let's regroup, focus on the end goal, and just know how proud I am of how many of you are being risk-takers in learning something unfamiliar.

Drama (Ms. Sinsheimer) - This semester Drama I students are spending a lot of time on stage, honing their improvisation skills. They learned how valuable these skills were during the Italian Renaissance by studying Commedia Del Arte and are now exploring how to use quick thinking and creativity when creating stories and characters. Drama I students are not only developing their creative minds, but their bodies as well, by creating an awareness of voice, posture, and movement through games and thought provoking exercises. We have also been exploring examples by reading An Actor Prepares by Stanislavski. The creative energy is high in room 401 and under the auditorium stage lights!

CY Updates - Hello CY students! We have after school tutoring held in the CY Room on Tuesday & Wednesday after school from 3:45 to 5pm in the City Year room. Keep up the good work in class. If you want to work with us during lunch, tell your City Year and we can give you a lunch pass for that day. Be on the lookout for our next Family Engagement Night on report card pick up! Can you take a guess what theme it will be?

Administrator Updates, From the Desk of Dr. Henderson - This time of the year is often referred to as the 3rd quarter slump. Student attendance and grades historically drop around this time of the year due to a variety of factors. Students find it difficult to snap back from semester 1 grades, the weather starts to break, and student motivation is low. Parents and students can fight the 3rd quarter slump by attending school regularly, coming in for extra tutoring, and finding interests in clubs or sports to stay motivated throughout this long stretch of school without breaks or holidays. If you suspect, you or your child are suffering from 3rd quarter slump, please reach out to AP Henderson at asvaughn@cps.edu

Congrats to all of our sophomores who volunteered to participate in the Personal Project Fair last month! The fair was an opportunity for students to showcase the projects they have been working on, while continuing to gather data and feedback from their teachers and peers. The freshman class came through and rated the sophomore projects based on our 10 IB Learner Profile Traits, and our junior Diploma Programme students who helped organize the event are in the process of tallying the results this week!

personal project 2020
*Please support your students in completing their Personal Project Report that will be scored by their Project Supervisors in the upcoming weeks! Thank you to our amazing English Department for supporting this effort and helping our students reflect on all of their hard work ...

Additionally, Team 10 is actively engaged in practicing for the upcoming PSAT in their core subject areas daily. The Math Department and Counseling team helped support a collective day of action to ensure that student’s practice scores under their College Board accounts were successfully linked to their Khan Academy accounts. This process allows for the Khan Academy program to generate guided practice questions for students based on their previous scores in Math and English.

Our goal is for all students to have at least 7 hours of practice time recorded in each of their accounts, ensuring that they are getting the practice they need to be successful on the upcoming PSAT. The schedule for March is as follows:

If they reach that goal, they are rewarded each week with fun incentives, such as homework passes, the chance to win a Wildcat Market gift card or even entries into our annual Pie-a-Teacher raffle! Winners will be announced following each week, beginning on March 9th.

New Graduation Requirements for 2020-
The counseling department is currently working to get our Seniors ready to graduate. This year, there are several new graduation requirements for CPS students.

Learn. Plan. Succeed.-
All CPS seniors must have a concrete Post-Secondary plan prior to graduation. This means a student must have taken steps to enroll in college, an apprenticeship or a job training program, enlist in the military, commit to a gap year program, or get a job prior to receiving their CPS diploma. The documentation needed to complete this requirement can be seen below:
Counseling table W2
Computer Science 4 All-
All CPS students will complete a Computer Science course during their high school career. Students can also earn a waiver for this requirement by being part of the DP programme, or any CTE pathway.

Service Learning Projects-
CPS students no longer have to complete Service Learning Hours, but they do need to complete two Service Learning Projects in order to graduate. These projects are offered through their classes and students can earn one project per year. Members of the Senior class will have an opportunity to make up both projects this year, if needed.

Earn College Credits as a Junior and Senior!

There are several opportunities for Clemente Juniors to earn college credit next year. Students can participate in several different programs through Chicago. Deadlines are coming up!
