Famility Update

Clemente Family Update 3/14/2021

To all Clemente Wildcats:

We are celebrating one year of remote learning--even when it’s been tough, you have made it this far! To celebrate all the high and lows of the last year, we are hosting a Wildcat Pride Day on March 19, next Friday. Similar to what the freshmen did a few weeks ago, students will have the opportunity to connect with classmates, relax and recuperate for the day doing different activities or even recover grades with support from teachers.
pridedays
  • During that 1st period time, you have the option of working asynchronously or meeting with teachers for office hours for support and check-ins. Your teachers will share how to connect with them during that time.
  • At the beginning of 2nd period (8:55-9:10), each grade level will check in to a Google Meet to review the plan and be marked present for attendance. An invite for your GL check-check in will be sent!
  • Until 6th period, you are free to hang out in different rooms, see your classmates and enjoy our 1 year remote-aversary! All students will eat lunch during 6th period.
  • After lunch, please go to your 7th period class for about 15 minutes to be marked for attendance again and then you will be released for two more periods of your choice of breakout rooms!
What is being offered?
  • Selections are still in the works but some things you can look forward to…
    • Video game room
    • Cartoon and PJs room
    • All kinds of movies and TV binge session rooms
    • Among Us room
    • Arts and crafts room
    • Yoga room
    • Tutoring and grade-level specific supports
    • And more!
We are excited to see you all then and hope this will be a much needed day of fun and rejuvenation!

Congratulations are in order for all of you, you have made it through the first half of Quarter 3! Progress reports serve as an opportunity to check in with yourself and reflect. The progress report grades are not final and will not be finalized until the end of the quarter. If you are happy with your grades, keep up the great work! If you are not happy with your grades, it may be time to practice some new habits.

A message on attendance from a 9th grade perspective:

Anelia Aviles- Fowler
March 12, 2020

My name is Anelia Aviles. I am a freshman at Clemente, class of 2024. Prior to coming to Clemente, school was very challenging for me. I never felt like I was getting the most out of it and sometimes struggling to understand certain subjects. Ever since I've been at Clemente, school has been a wonderful place to learn. Clemente teachers are the best; they assisted me in overcoming my academic challenges and learning new skills.

I’ve been asked to share my perspective on the importance of attendance for Clemente students and how it affects grades. To start with, students should be inspired to get good grades, follow their dreams, and accomplish their life goals. When you receive good grades and have good attendance, you will have a better chance for success. Studies have found that students who attend school on a regular basis receive higher grades than those who do not. Additionally, those who don’t attend or do not graduate significantly lower their chance of finding a good job later in life. The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for teachers and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent. In addition to falling behind in academics like I said it affects the future. For example, if you want to get into a good college low attendance in high school might prevent you from getting in.

Speaking from personal knowledge when I was in elementary school throughout my 4-8th grade years I was slacking off and didn’t really worry about grades. I didn’t think grades were going to impact my chance of getting into a good high school & college. I wasn’t attending regularly and was getting bad grades. Once I started to attend regularly, my grades improved.

Sincerely-
Anelia Aviles

Congrats, sophomores on making it halfway through Quarter 3 of your sophomore year. We are also coming up on our one year remote-iversary! That’s one year of admirable persistence, resilience, and adaptability. We are so proud of you.

Here is a message from English teacher, Ms. Clark:

Wow! What a year it has been so far... We made it through an entire semester of remote learning. We are so proud of the effort our students have been putting into these long days, we know all this screen time is not easy on them.

With the new semester, we wanted to take on a new approach. to try to get students more engaged in the remote learning setting. We surveyed our students and asked them what they were interested in learning about. We wanted their interests to drive the direction of the rest of our school year. On average, our sophomores were most interested in the topics of horror/humor, self-help/mental health, technology and truth. They expressed that they wanted to have more life lessons, and deep talks. This Friday 3/5 we introduced "Fresh Friday" where students will now have the opportunity to teach the rest of the class a fresh topic or skill that they want to share with others.

These can be skills that are academic and nonacademic. Each student in this sophomore class has something special that they have to offer the world and we are excited to continue to uncover these truths

Hi juniors,
We are halfway through Quarter 3 and progress reports are coming out this week. While progress reports are a check on how you are doing so far, quarter grades are soon to follow. One way to avoid the stress and panic at the end of the quarter is to recover your grade now! We have shared this in the newsletter before but it never hurts to reach out to teachers ahead of time. This will make it easier for you to tackle missing assignments and for your teacher to get them graded in a timely manner. Copy this template below (it may look familiar) as a way to structure your emails to your teachers.

Subject: Improving my grade

Hi Mr./Ms. _____________________ , (add your teacher’s name)

Before the semester ends, I wanted to reach out about my grade, which is currently _____% (insert your grade here) and see if there was anything I can do to improve it. I looked in Aspen and saw that I am missing ________________________ (fill this part in with whatever assignments you are missing!). Can I make this assignment up or is it better to focus on a different assignment?

Please let me know what I can do. I appreciate it!

Thanks,
_______________ (your name)

This also means that the SAT is just five short weeks away. While this date is looming, there is still plenty of time to prepare independently and with support from your teachers. Here are some key pieces of information that we presented in the Town Hall and are included below.

Additionally, you are always welcome to attend weekly SAT tutoring with junior teachers and staff. Next week will focus on evidence-based reading and writing, which is a great area to work on before the exam.

In the meantime, even with the stress of the SAT, please take care of yourselves and reach out to teachers, staff and culture and climate for anything you may need. You all have continued to persevere through a full year remote learning and the junior team applauds you! If you do need some additional supports, you have many people at school who are there to help. Some people to email and set up time to meet with are:
Don’t hesitate to reach out! We are here to support you.
