Clemente Family Update 3/24/2021

Dear Clemente Families,

As a school community working to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy, we are deeply saddened to see the uprise in hatred, violence, and murder against our brothers and sisters in the Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander community. These are symptoms of a deeply insidious historic problem, showing up in new and not-so-new ways far too often. We must stand up and be vocal against these injustices impacting the Asian community because an attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us. People are actively choosing harm over healing, prejudice over collective positive impact. And it needs to stop. Last week, we were again witnesses to a tragic mass murder in Atlanta.

We say their names:
Soon Chung Park
Hyun Jung Grant
Sun Cha Kim
Yong Ae Yue
Xiaojie Tan
Daoyou Feng
Delaina Ashley Yaun
Paul Andre Michels

Clemente stands in solidarity with our Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander brothers, sisters, and non-conforming siblings, forever united against all acts of racism and white supremacy. To those hurting. We see, hear, and value you. To those in need. We are here for you. To those waiting to take a stand. Silence is violence, and we need to take an active and collective anti-racist stance.

As educators, we must lean into discomfort and foster brave classrooms; this dual pandemic of COVID and racism urges us to extend this practice consistently and throughout our entire school community. We must now in the face of adversity stand in solidarity with our Asian students, their families, and communities. We cannot and will not sit idly by as we watch a community of learners and students be targeted by racism, ignorance, and violence. This does not start and end with addressing tragedies, but how we must work to regularly teach the contributions, joy, and histories of people to better understand the varied experiences of the AAPI community. We must work to actively wipe out racist dogma and ideology so that these tragedies cease entirely.

Anti-Racism & Allyship Resources:
  • Share safety tips with students, friends, and family on what to do if encountering or witnessing hate.
  • Reach out to your Asian friends and colleagues – but don't ask them to educate you
  • Attend a workshop to be a more effective bystander and anti-racist ally
  • Help raise awareness with students, friends, and family
  • Donate to and support Stop AAPI Hate
  • Mental Health Resources:
    • Asian Mental Health Collective: @asianmentalhealthcollective - Community and resources for Asian mental health support
    • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
      • 1-800-950-6264
      • The helpline can be reached Mon-Fr, 10 am-8 pm, ET.
  • Get civically engaged in your local community. For example,
    • Ask your elected officials what they are doing to increase resources for survivors and their families, and for intervention- and prevention-based programs such as anti-racism education in schools and in communities.
    • Demand ordinances or resolutions to condemn hate. Endorse strong civil rights laws at the local and state levels. What are the issues that exist within your community that need to be addressed?
