As a teacher, I would like to thank all of our freshmen for being so patient with us as we learn to navigate the hybrid model with you! It has been so joyous getting to meet some of you in person. Honestly, it has been revitalizing for many teachers. Thank you for continuing to be your authentic selves with us through such a strange time. I am very much looking forward to continuing to build relationships with you all over the next eight weeks and through the next three years! -Ms.Redman

Student Perspective on Returning to the Classroom: Lanaiya Brooks

Being back inside the classroom was really weird at first, especially seeing all of our teachers that we would be online with. All of our teachers were so excited to meet us! Even though students are still getting comfortable being in the classroom and are nervous or shy when speaking out, our teachers try to get us to speak out as much as possible. If we need to go to the bathroom or don’t know what floor our class is on, all we have to do is ask security and they are there to help us! I feel like being back in the classroom is going to help students out a lot especially now that we are in front of our teacher, so if we have any questions or anything then all we would have to do is let them know. Overall these past two weeks in the school building on Monday’s and Tuesday’s have been great!

A Teacher’s Perspective on the Return to School

March 13, 2020 seems like a lifetime ago, but that was the last day I was in the classroom with my students. A two-week precautionary break turned into a thirteen-month adjustment for all teachers and students. Adjusting to remote learning was definitely a challenge for a technologically deficient teacher like me, but as time went on, I started to find my rhythm teaching through a totally new and unfamiliar medium. After months of planning and lots of trial and error, virtual class began to feel productive again. I was able to see progress in student engagement and learning. I began to see the progress in teaching of the content/skills our students will need to be successful now, and in the future. But I still had trouble sleeping at night knowing I hadn’t reached 100% of my students.

Unfortunately, not all students adapted well to remote learning. Many of our students require more than a teacher on their laptop screen, some require the financial resources needed for reliable internet access, and others just need the structure that attending the school building provides. Needless to say, I was delighted when the city decided to give students the choice of remaining in remote learning or attend school in a hybrid model.

As April 12, 2021 quickly approached, I began to call the families of the students who I felt had not acclimated well to remote learning, and to my delight, many of them agreed that their student would be best served physically attending school. As the first day of in-person learning arrived, I was delighted to see many of the students who I hadn’t seen for most of the year. And the best part is that they were engaged during class and seemed relieved to be back in a structured environment again. Since that first day back, students have maintained that level of engagement while attendance and enrollment has increased. Let’s just say I sleep a little bit better now knowing that I’m reaching a larger percentage of our Freshmen, it is not at 100% yet, but that’s the goal we teachers set for ourselves.

It's been wonderful having so many of our young people back in the building these past two weeks. Thanks to their maturity, enthusiasm, and cooperation, re-entry has gone very smoothly.

On the days that your student is in the building, we ask that you remind them that, while phones are allowed during in-person learning this quarter, they should not be using FaceTime as a means of communicating while in school. This becomes a privacy violation for others who may appear in the call.

Thank you for your continued support of learning at Clemente!

Hello, sophomores and sophomore families!

First off, we want to thank you for the grace, flexibility, and enthusiasm you’ve shown in the past few weeks (yet again!) as we navigate (yet again!) a new landscape of education for RCCA. The energy you’ve brought into the school and virtual setting has been wonderful.

Check out what Ms. Coffey’s students have been up to:

In English II in Ms. Coffey and Ms. Clark’s classes, students overwhelmingly voted to study the horror genre these past 6 weeks. They focused on how authors create suspense in story-telling and how to embed direct quotes into their own writing. They’ve had many chances to be creative and blown away their teachers and classmates with their creativity. Some students wrote hair-raising short stories, some recorded creepy dramatic readings of horror stories, and other drew, painted, and designed visual responses to a piece of horror. Overall the unit was fun and left Coffey with nightmares!

Student Check-in
Hello! This is a quick check-in to see how school is going and making sure you are getting the resources and the reach out you need. This survey is created by a fellow student and will be used in the LSC meetings. There will be a survey sent out once every month. Thanks!

Juniors, congratulations to the second group of you who took the SAT this week! For the majority of the class, this is a huge accomplishment and hopefully a stress of your shoulders for the remainder of the year. With the SAT coming to a close for most students, there are very few junior updates this week!

As we continue to work through hybrid learning, we all appreciate your flexibility and patience as we tackle new challenges and victories. If you are struggling with adjusting, as always, you are encouraged to reach out to teachers. You may be feeling less support than normal as teachers try to balance students in front of them and on the screen. Some tips for communicating with teachers if this is the case are below, which were also shared the week prior:

  • If you’re remote and need immediate help or a question answered in the chat, consider unmuting and saying “Excuse me Mr./Mrs./Ms. _______! Can you answer my question in the chat?
  • If you’re in person and would like paper copies, email or ask your teacher in person
  • If you’re remote OR in person and do not have a laptop still, please email or ask your teacher and one will be assigned to you
Additionally, with the new asynchronous time added at the end of Wednesday’s (C day), that is a great time to check in with your teachers and anyone else who supports you academically or socioemotionally. Email, Google Chat or message your teacher in class if there’s a time you want to meet to review grades, go over feedback or just check in!
