There are mysteries a foot everywhere you look! Between crimes in biology to crime in English, when are we ever going to know who did it? The lurking unknown will continue on into the weeks to come. While parts of our day will remain mysterious, one area of your daily life should not be, please keep an eye on your grades. As you are reading this you will only have 28 days left of school, let’s finish strong!
ScreenFacetime
It's been wonderful having so many of our young people back in the building these past two weeks. Thanks to their maturity, enthusiasm, and cooperation, re-entry has gone very smoothly.

On the days that your student is in the building, we ask that you remind them that, while phones are allowed during in-person learning this quarter, they should not be using FaceTime as a means of communicating while in school. This becomes a privacy violation for others who may appear in the call.

Thank you for your continued support of learning at Clemente!

Student Check-in
Hello! This is a quick check-in to see how school is going and making sure you are getting the resources and the reach out you need. This survey is created by a fellow student and will be used in the LSC meetings. There will be a survey sent out once every month. Thanks!

Hi Sophomores and Sophomore families!

After weeks of preparation and studying, our whole Sophomore class was given the Constitution Test this past week! Due to our hybrid status, our test looked a little differently than it has in previous years, with a mix of amendment matching, fill in the blank, and document-based free response questions. Some in-person students opted into a discussion- based "oral exam" for their Constitution Test and did a phenomenal job!

Passing the Constitution Test is a graduation requirement for all students. If students did not meet the minimum passing score last week, they are welcome to come after school to (virtual) tutoring on Tuesdays or Wednesday afternoon to retake an alternative version of the test. Students can retake the test as many times as needed this year, but there is no longer in class instructional time for review.

Instead, the last five weeks of our school year will be devoted to Reparations Won, a district mandated curriculum about former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge and the illegal torturing of over 200 men at one of CPD's "black sites". In 2015, the City of Chicago made history and became the first city to provide reparations for racially motivated police violence by creating the Chicago Torture Justice Center in Englewood and requiring all CPS students to learn about Burge and the torture cases.

It is our great honor to teach this unit during this current moment of increased visibility and awareness about police violence. It is our hope to provide space for students to both process and think deeply about the local and national histories that inform present day, race-based violence. Over the course of the unit, students will be analyzing primary sources taken directly from the Burge trial. The unit will culminate with the opportunity for students to create their own "oral history" by interviewing a community member about the role of policing in their life.

Please reach out to Clemente's US History teachers August Hastings (achastings@cps.edu) or Sam Texeira (stexeira@cps.edu) if you have any questions about either the Constitution Test or the Reparations Won Curriculum! We are excited to hear from you.
