We have had a great start in Freshmen Civics (Seminar) with Spooner, Hastings, and Landaverde. Freshmen students have been watching acclaimed documentary “13th” and looking at the historical origins of modern-day mass incarceration. Students have been taking notes and engaging in discussion.

With Hastings and Spooner, students are even creating skits to explore the different ideologies that inform the American prison system. Although there was some nerves about performing in front of class, students have since warmed to their roles and are going all-out in the creation of props, backdrops, and their scripts. The process has been “surprisingly fun” according to Nathan M., which is high praise from a teenager. Students perform in class on Thursday!

Sophomores are in full swing in English class where they are exploring extremely short stories often called micro-stories. They are writing their own micro-narratives about a time they learned a life lesson, a story about themselves that always makes them laugh, or a time they received or gave advice.
Students are aiming to follow the Essentials of Micro-Fiction as put forth by Camille Renshaw in this article: https://www.pifmagazine.com/1998/06/the-essentials-of-microfiction/

Ms. Coffey’s students have been voraciously reading books of their choice at the start of class each day. Check out this photo of two students with their fake mustaches from the library for “checking out the library’s stash!”

In physics this week students got to work researching and developing their own lab investigations. Students delved into articles and videos to better understand how to approach their topic and in the upcoming week, with one another as participants, students will collect and analyze data pertaining to a topic of their own choice before we make the move into kinematics.

Remember, PSAT Tutoring is available after schools Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the next month from 3:30 - 4:30.

Hello everyone! This week is week 4! Earlier last week, seniors had their first Town Hall! In the town hall seniors were given information on attendance, grades, the senior contract, and other items of interest to seniors including events! Some things to keep in mind:
  • Senior Contracts are due to Ms. Busch in room 217 by September 12th, as soon as possible to participate in senior activities & events which begin in the next couple weeks.
  • Contact Janice Porrata (Attendance Clerk) if students are absent. JiPorrata@cps.edu
  • CPS recognizes 6 reasons for an absence:
    • 1. Student Illness
    • 2. Observance of a Religious Holiday
    • 3. Death in the immediate family
    • 4. Family Emergency
    • 5. Circumstances which cause reasonable concern for student safety
    • 6. Other situations beyond student control (contact JiPorrata@cps.edu)
  • A full day of attendance is when a student receives 300 or more minutes of instruction.
  • A half day of attendance is when a student receives below 150 instructional minutes.
  • Seniors need 90% attendance or better to participate in all activities (please contact jiPorrata@cps.edu if attendance needs to be adjusted per the CPS absence policy)
  • Senior Seminar: This is now week 4 of senior seminar. Seniors have completed information regarding the (LPS) Learn-Plan-Succeed requirement for graduation. They should be able to discuss this with their family and if this is unclear, all students have access to the information for LPS via the Google Classroom. Students have accessed Naviance, which is a system that students use for college matches, scholarships, recommendations, transcripts, and applications. This week we will be exploring City Colleges and beginning the first college application process. Students will also be learning how to write a recommendation letter request and sending this to adults and staff who can recommend them for college and other programs.
  • Recruiters! THIS WEEK, recruiters are coming to Clemente from Dominican University (9/13), Aveda Institute (9/14), Western Michigan (9/15).
