Math Lab

We’ve been seeing great progress in the Freshman class! Recently, our students have shown considerable growth in identifying arithmetic and geometric sequences. Those words might seem a little confusing to anyone who hasn’t been in an algebra class for a while, but really what we’re talking about is patterns of growth. Students have been able to identify constant rates of increase and decrease (like we see when traveling at a steady speed) and also exponential increase and decrease (like you find in financial investments, cellular growth, and population decrease).

Students are also steadily improving in their foundational skills, and we are excited to see how they do on their summatives here at the end of first quarter. They’ll be taking their next round of their Foundational Skills Assessments next week, and we’re expecting great things!

Lastly, we have a group of students who are undertaking a term project. We want to shout out these students for finding ways of using the math they’re learning in the real world. So far, we have students using trigonometry to calculate the height of buildings with shadows, we have a student building a mini crossbow, a catapult (and calculating the path of projectiles), a student creating a budget for his first car, and more! Exciting stuff – we can’t wait to see how the projects turn out!

Sophomores in Español 2 are making that leap into the unknown after a Unit of review. New vocabulario, new música, new gramática, and new cultural celebrations!

Thematically, we are beginning Unit 2 about “La Salud (Mental/Física/Social/Profesional)” (Mental/Physical/Social/Professional Health). Students will soon be working on developing a PSA en español to educate their Clemente peers about different aspects of health - relevant to high school/teenage years. We will eventually hang them in the hallway!

In addition, our Día de Muertos altar will soon be set up on the 5th floor to celebrate and honor our community’s loved ones that have passed on. All students in Spanish classes are invited to bring in an object or a photograph that was special to their departed family member/friend/pet.

In the photos below, students are having fun reviewing their present tense conjugations in Señora Cortiñas’s class.
A little competition before we shift our focus to past tense narratives and conversations!

AP Human Geography this year is all about acknowledging and appreciating the everyday geographic skills and concepts that we experience on a daily basis. From GPS technology to ancient travel journals to using map scales to interpreting relationship graphs, AP Human Geo helps us to be aware of the skills that have helped civilization to become as advanced as it has.

Students are learning this by investigating key technologies, such as Google Maps and Space X’s Starlink satellites, to make observations about key 21st Century issues, such as income, energy consumption, and demographics.
