This week’s in Biology, Mr. Holmes Class: The Earth’s Surface is 75% Covered With Water!!!!

Did you know that the earth is mostly water on its surface!?!? THen why do we have issues with water scarcity and clean drinking water? (Think Detroit) Students studied the properties of water as they pertain to supporting life and learned about the marvelous molecule we affectionately call H20.

Students learned that one of the most influential characteristics of water that give rise to its amazing capabilities is its molecular arrangement and how it shares electrons. Water is a polar molecule with a positive leaning end and a negative leaning end. In many ways, water is very predictable and acts like a magnet. Because water is polar, it can bond with nearby water molecules in an arrangement called Hydrogen Bonding. H bonds allow water to be cohesive and adhesive and support capillary action. (The movement responsible for water getting from roots to leaves)

In fact water is so cohesive and willing to bond with other water, it can defy gravity! If you fill a cup with water and put a plate on it, turn it over and see what happens!! The water molecules are bonding with themselves and the non water plate molecules. Seemingly the water is holding the plate up instead of falling to the earth as we predicted!!! Thanks H bonding :)

In US history this week, students held a trial to decide who is guilty of the murder of the Tainos, the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico and the Carribean. Students worked in teams as both prosecutors and defense lawyers and they really impressed me with their argumentation. Is it ever a problem for you at home that your kids are so good at arguing???

Next, we’ll be beginning to talk about the Atlantic slave trade and the creation of an economy based on slavery in the Americas. I’m looking forward to developing our writing and critical thinking skills in this upcoming unit.

In English III this week, we are finishing up our summative assessment for Unit 1! Students are tasked with creating a personal statement that reflects their values as a person. Many students have expressed that they like this assignment because they get to learn about themselves while working on something that they will likely use for job and college applications. We will be moving on to introducing Unit 2: Poetry by the end of the week and many students are excited to study some of their favorite poets/singers/rappers!
