Imagine this: I have a bunch of nickels and dimes, thirty to be exact, that have a value of $2.00. How many dimes and nickels do I have? Got the answer? If so, you’ve solved a systems of equations problem!

Sophomore math students are currently working on Unit 5: Solving Systems of Inequalities and Equations. The goal is to determine how many cat cages and dog runs our dynamic duo, Clarita and Carlos should purchase, given the constraints of cost, space, and feeding and care time, to make the most money possible with their business, C-n-C Pet Sitters. The constraints are graphed as inequalities and the most profit will be at one of the points of intersection of the four lines. The puzzle is, which one?

This week in our Culinary Arts classes the students used their breakfast knowledge to cater breakfast for college reps. Leading up to this event, the students researched homemade breakfast sausage, quiche and pour batters. They also learned the importance of conversion to yield the appropriate amount. The students prepared an assortment of muffins (chocolate chip, double chocolate and blueberry), bacon, a fruit display and made to order omelets. They really enjoyed showing their skills off to the staff and college reps that were in attendance!

In Math classes this week, students worked on (and hopefully completed!) their official Personal Project proposals! This will be their formal declaration of their learning goal and the product that they intend to make. Sophomores connected their idea to their personal interests and experiences, along with determining what skills they have applied to formulate their proposal. Personal Project proposals, if not already submitted, proposals are due on November 4th!
