In the next coming weeks we will be starting an incentive for students who are on time to 1st and 6th period, so be on the lookout for further details! You can also see your student’s daily and class attendance on ASPEN. If you need a parent login, reach out to lasalgado@cps.edu to set up your parent portal account.

We are now entering week 5 of the second semester, which means summatives are approaching quickly. Please check in with your student about any missing assignments they have, or if they are struggling in one of their classes. Most of their teachers are available during lunch or after school.

Have any questions about your student or need to reach out to an individual teacher? Check out our staff directory here: rccachicago.org/staff/

This week in Chemistry students are continuing to learn about acids and bases while learning about different aspects that may contribute to climate change. This week specifically, students will be learning about what happens to the excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (due to industrial pollution) and how it can affect the ocean. Students will be using their OWN carbon dioxide and bromothymol blue solution (which helps indicate pH) and see if carbon dioxide does lower pH, thus causing a more acidic solution. They will be listening to an NPR Podcast about research done on ocean acidification and how antacids (tums, pepto bismol etc) have been found to neutralize pH in our bodies and how this can be used to help neutralize the acidity in our oceans. At the end of the week students will be learning more about a specific antacid, creating a poster with their lab group and choosing which antacids they would like to test to see if antacids could actually be a viable solution to neutralize ocean acidity in a hands-on lab next week.
