|
Freshmen Civics students with Mr. Spooner and Ms. Hastings are one week away from finishing their museum exhibits! Students have spent the last six weeks designing a research question, conducting independent research, and now curating “an exhibit” of at least three objects. Topics range from mental health under covid to the impact of video games on teenager’s emotional regulation to immigration history in Chicago. We are very excited to debut our exhibits Tuesday, March 29th. Families: be on the look out for an email from Spooner and Hastings about details of our “private view”!

In more serious news, freshmen students suffered a loss in the staff versus student basketball game this Thursday. The student team played with heart but unfortunately were not able to keep up! We look forward to a rematch later this year.

¡Los estudiantes de primer año de educación cívica con el Sr. Spooner y la Sra. Hastings están a una semana de terminar sus exhibiciones en el museo! Los estudiantes han pasado las últimas seis semanas diseñando una pregunta de investigación, realizando una investigación independiente y ahora curando "una exhibición" de al menos tres objetos. Los temas van desde la salud mental bajo covid hasta el impacto de los videojuegos en la regulación emocional de los adolescentes y la historia de la inmigración en Chicago. En noticias más serias, los estudiantes de primer año sufrieron una derrota en el juego de baloncesto entre el personal y los estudiantes este jueves. ¡El equipo de estudiantes jugó con corazón pero desafortunadamente no pudo seguir el ritmo! Esperamos una revancha a finales de este año.

The sophomores have been working diligently for our Constitution Test Unit. As a graduation requirement for Illinois, we naturally see students frequently worried about this, so we’ve attempted to make this unit fun and engaging. The most exciting part of this has been reviewing Civil Liberties with students. By studying Supreme Court cases focused on young people and schools, we are creating a better understanding of the rights of students and youth, and fostering some important conversations about visions of liberty and justice that are unfortunately not yet realized in this country but that we know our students will fight for and deserve.

This week in Junior Seminar, students are setting SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) goals for themselves, their post-secondary lives, their potential summer jobs, and their time here at Clemente. Additionally, students are gearing up for their college visit to downtown Chicago campuses, such as Roosevelt, Colombia, and Loyola University, to name a few. Students in both sections of Junior Seminar will “battle” each other through an Amazing Race-style competition, whereby pre-sealed clues will be handed out to get them to the finish line. We are so looking forward to gathering in teams on March 30th!

Lastly, a large part of our work right now is centered around databases, such as Naviance Super Match and MyNextMove.org. Students are using their results in their career interest profiles to figure out majors, safety/match/reach college application decisions, and their overall next steps. This tool has been eye-opening for many, and is serving as a launching pad for life after high school!

We are also celebrating March Madness this week, and showing off our crazy socks, looking forward to the pep rally, as well as the viewing of “Hoop Dreams.” On the Library front, Junior Seminar students are enjoying leaning into booktalks structured around the theme of “March Sadness, “ as we learn about books that might make us have an “ugly-cry.”

Good Morning Clemente Family and Friends!
March is a busy month full of wonderful things! Many students have been/or are taking finals for their units in various classes, finishing assignments, participating in a spirit week, march madness events, pep rallies, and more. We have picture week coming up March 24-25 for seniors and many have found the picture packets in room 217. There have been questions about ordering online: (Http://www.potterstudio.com/rcca22)
- Do I need to reserve a time slot online?
Answer: Just pick any time slot, the photographer is going to go by the Clemente Schedule on Http://www.rccachicago.org He just required a time slot to complete the purchase.
- What if I miss my time slot/or don’t see my class?
Answer: Go during your lunch period Thursday or Friday. Friday Lunch period will continue into 8th period for students who need to take photos.
- Can I bring high heels, curling irons, or flat irons to school with me?
Answer: No. Please bring tennis shoes with you to walk around in until you take your photographs. Clemente has escalators and students move floor to floor, which can be a safety issue. Please do not bring flat irons or curling irons to school, as this could be a safety/fire hazard.
Seniors re-taking the SAT on Wednesday March 23rd, should arrive by 8am. Seniors re-taking the SAT should have already registered and/or spoken with their counselor. For all other seniors, there is no school on Wednesday March 23rd. For further questions, e-mail RForeman1@cps.edu
Prom date is out! Prom is Saturday May 28th at the Embassy Suites Downtown Chicago. (511 N Columbus Drive). Ticket prices/purchase information will come out in the next couple weeks. The theme is Masquerade. Please note that staff need to meet before we provide further information, but we are so excited for the big day! Seniors, please remember that the Senior Contract needs to be turned in, maintain C’s or higher, Attendance 85% or better, and no more than 1 Level 1-2 infraction. For questions please reach out to Dmorales@cps.edu The attendance rate will be taken from the date of the senior townhall (February 28th). Please reach out to jiporrata@cps.edu to communicate about attendance, or to utilize your 5 CPS mental health days. These days will not count against your attendance.

Sophomores, can you believe how far you have come with your Personal Projects? You are officially finished with your journey! A huge congratulations to the 97 sophomores who submitted their final papers. As a reminder, that was a requirement for participation in the Half Cap ceremony so the sophomore team applauds your foresight in ensuring that was turned in.
|
The final steps for the Personal Project, fortunately, rest entirely on the mentors’ shoulders. Your final papers will be assessed by your mentors and scores will be submitted to the IB. You will receive your final scores from the IB, along with a certificate that can be used in college and scholarship applications, when you return as juniors.
|
For sophomores who presented their product as the Personal Project Fair in February and submitted their final paper as well, you are eligible to attend the Personal Project field trip! Please keep an eye out for a field trip slip from Ms. Dryjanski, as well as more details.
|
Moreover, select sophomores have volunteered to visit Freshmen Seminar classes in order to share their experience this year and help freshmen connect to the research project they are currently working on. We are looking forward to sharing some advice and ideas with the rising sophomores to help them prepare!
