Famility Update

Clemente Family Update 5/23/2020

Students, Parents and Guardians,

We are so grateful for your flexibility and engagement as we continue to navigate remote learning at Clemente. We are about five weeks out from the end of the semester and want to ensure that our families understand the expectations of students during this time.

Right now, the most effective and important tool you have is communication! Emails are always open and we want to hear from you. If things are happening in your life or your situation changes, please let your teachers or counselors know so that teachers can be empathetic and flexible. We recognize that this moment is unprecedented and we are all learning how to navigate it. The more you reach out to us, the more we can support Clemente families.

At this time, teachers are making every effort to reach out as frequently as possible to students and families through email, texts, calls and updates on Google Classroom. Teachers are also available to students during office hours so that students can get specific, 1:1 help with assignments or look to their teachers in supporting any social-emotional needs. Finally, we are also aware that remote learning presents a challenge to students who might receive additional support in the regular classroom environment and that this may be affecting their ability to perform at their usual academic level. This understanding will inform how we approach assessment for students during remote learning. Most importantly, we want our students to feel as much normalcy and consistency as possible, despite the changes that have occurred in traditional delivery of instruction.

The district has released a new grading policy that is different from how grades were being given before the end of Quarter 3. From CPS, the new grading policy says that:

  • If you raise your grade or maintain your grade after Q3 by completing remote learning, you will earn a letter grade for the end of the semester → this will benefit your GPA positively AND you get the credit!
  • If your grade drops after Q3 but you are engaging remote learning regularly, you will earn a PASS for the end of the semester → this will not impact your GPA positively or negatively AND you get the credit!
  • If you complete little to no remote learning after Q3, you will earn an incomplete for the semester → this will not impact your GPA negatively BUT you will need to make this class up in credit recovery. Credit recovery includes night school, summer school and Saturday school.
    • However, students are encouraged to follow suggested expectations i.e. consistent communication with teachers by students and families in order to avoid earning an incomplete
To best support students, the following chart is a list of suggested tasks for parents/guardians and students can do during this time.

Team 11
To keep you in the loop and get you all the necessary information for the end of the year, the junior team is hosting a virtual town hall on Thursday, May 28 at 12 PM. We will use this time to answer important questions, share key info and check in with the juniors! We also have some fun stuff planned for our students. Students and parents are welcome to join.

In order to join, please go to meet.google.com and use the meeting code RCCA2020. This will allow you to join the meeting; the Google Meet will be open a few minutes before 12!

Additionally, we want to hear how you are doing and how remote learning is going for you, juniors! This will really help us support you before the end of the year and make sure that the teachers and staff offer you the most effective support. Fill out this survey to provide feedback to your teachers and ask questions: https://forms.gle/9RvS3eQjk6XbRAPe8

We hope to see you at the Town Hall soon!

Feeling stressed about schoolwork, grades, and end-of-the-year deadlines? Try Progressive Muscle Relaxation!

What is Progressive Muscle Relaxation?
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is an effective technique for reducing overall body tension as well as psychological stress. This simple technique involves the tensing and relaxing of all of the major muscles in your body in order from your head to your feet. By tensing your muscles before relaxing them, you enable yourself to relax them more thoroughly after you release, letting go of physical tension more effectively. Fortunately, it can be easily learned and practiced virtually anywhere.

How Do I Practice PMR?
  1. Find Some Time. Block off at least 15 minutes to begin.
  2. Sit and Make Yourself Comfortable. After finding a quiet place and several free minutes to practice PMR, sit or lie down and make yourself comfortable. It's more effective to stretch out and lie down, but if you don't have room to lie down, sitting in a comfortable chair is fine as well. Unfold your arms and uncross your legs so that you have easy circulation and your body is able to really relax.
  3. Start With Your Face. Begin by tensing all the muscles in your face and scalp. Make a tight grimace, close your eyes as tightly as possible, clench your teeth, even move your ears up if you can. Hold this for the count of eight as you inhale.
  4. Let Go of Your Tension. Now exhale and relax completely. Let your face go completely lax, as though you were sleeping. Feel the tension seep from your facial muscles, and enjoy the feeling. Take your time and relax completely before you move onto the next step. You can repeat this step until your face feels thoroughly relaxed if desired.
  5. Move to Your Neck. Next, completely tense your neck and shoulders, again inhaling and counting to eight. Then exhale and relax. Again, this step can be repeated until you feel absolutely relaxed in this area, particularly because many people carry tension in their neck and shoulder muscles. Take your time, and let yourself go.
  6. Work Your Way Down. Continue down your body, repeating the procedure with all of your muscle groups (chest, abdomen, arms, hands, legs, feet, etc.).

CLEMENTE SOLIDARITY FUND

Roberto Clemente Community Academy (RCCA) is a public high school at the end of the Paseo Boricua Corridor in Humboldt Park.

Our community is made up of resilient working class families from multiple parts of the city.

Many of our families have been hit hard during this pandemic. We are asking for relief for families suffering from job loss, health issues, lack of food and adequate supplies.

We want to make sure that everyone has what they need to
take care of their families. Clemente families have donated to classroom projects, supported striking teachers, and volunteered countless hours to support our school.

Now is the time to come together and support our community.

We can't do it alone but you can help.

Your donation will be given out in $200 increments in order to aide families with paying bills, rent, getting food and supplies. Please click on the donation tab to make a difference.

100% of the funds will be disbursed to Clemente families in need of immediate support.

If you are a student or parent seeking aid, or know of someone from Clemente who needs financial relief, please contact us at ClementeSolidarityFund@gmail.com.

**NOTE: This solidarity fund is in no way affiliated with RCCA or CPS.
This is an effort put forth by community members for our school community.
This is NOT a tax-deductible contribution - solidarity, not charity.*
