In Mr. Landaverde’s Law in American Society class, students are analyzing criminal law. Students are making films depicting the violation of specific criminal laws. They are asked to write a movie script along with a blueprint of special effects and sound bites to be added during the editing portion of the movie-making experience. The assignment is designed to help students better understand criminal laws with a more of a hand on approach.

Freshman Jayleen Webb was asked how she felt about acting out specific criminal law violations, she responded, “I like doing this kind of stuff because we are actually learning law while having fun, and not just sitting in the classroom. It’s fun to be able to film a movie and also learning how to digitally edit and learn how to add special effects. I can’t wait to see everybody else’s movies and try to figure out what type of criminal violations they did.

After students are done with their films, they will all analyze and evaluate each other’s finished product and try to figure out what violation they are trying to depict. Students evaluating the films will have to back up their claim with evidence from the film, as well as the law. Special thanks to Ms Townhouse for letting the students film in the newly remodeled library.

Students in Chemistry are exploring atom and molecule patterns in the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Students created a mini-lab that involved a beaker filled with 100ml of hot water, a beaker filled with 100 ml of cold water, and food coloring. Students put food coloring (blue and yellow) into the beakers and observed. Through their qualitative observations, students discovered molecules move quicker when heat is added.

This week, students will be completing their summative assessment on art in political activism. Students have studied how photographers and artists create political art that communicates complex issues through visual humor, such as visual puns and visual sarcasm. After reflecting on the role of art in community engagement, students have also now created their own activism posters about an issue they care about. They have drafted and redrafted different versions of their art, experimenting with color, symbols, text, and layout. Their art will be displayed around the classroom so that they can share their passion for their chosen issue.
