Over 120 Freshman students went to the Field Museum last Wednesday on a trip co-sponsored by the ninth-grade English and Civics teams. Any student in good academic standing was invited, whereas students who stayed at school participated in an end-of-the-quarter study hall.

On the field trip, students searched the Field Museum for artifacts relating to the IB Global Concepts of Personal Cultural Expression and Civilizations and Social Histories. Students in Robinson’s English classes made connections between ancient civilizations and their unit on Greek mythology. Meanwhile, students in Hastings and Spooner’s Civics course were able to apply their knowledge of the repatriation of indigenous cultural artifacts to contemporary exhibits! Civics students have spent over five weeks considering ethical questions such as “When, if ever, is it okay to display human remains?” and it was awesome to see how the Field Museum addressed these same issues in their own exhibits.

This was an exciting opportunity for students to make interdisciplinary connections at one of the most renowned cultural institutions of the world, and we are grateful to all the staff members whose hard work made this experience possible. Way to go, ninth graders, for ending the third quarter in such a fun way! 🎉

¡FELICIDADES! Estamos agradecidos por tenerla aquí.

In Spanish class, we are exploring the theme of jobs and how we get involved in our community. In a couple weeks, the students will be completing a service project that addresses an issue in their community and then offering solutions. Meanwhile, we are immersing ourselves in preterite/past tense and practicing how to construct narratives in the target language. In the images below, students are using their flipbooks (a helpful resource with all the rules and irregularities) to complete a puzzle activity.

In other news, we celebrated Carmen De Jesus’s 35TH YEAR at Clemente last week! ¡FELICIDADES! We are lucky to have you here.
