StructuredLiteracy
Greetings Parents/Guardians of our students in Structured Literacy! We are really excited to have all of your young people in our classes and to see them grow as readers this year. This course is divided into two courses taught by each of the three teachers: the Wilson Reading Systems and Just Words. Both curriculums utilize multisensory language instruction that aids students with improving their decoding of challenging words and spelling proficiency.

As many of you have already been told (or maybe overheard during our live classes) a huge part of students’ success in both program’s curriculum is participation, both verbal and written. To some students, this may feel strange to be doing over Google Meet, but it is vital to getting the most of their experience in the class. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to have conversations with students about the importance of active participation in this course. If there are any barriers, especially technological ones like a non-working microphone or camera for live online classes, please reach out so we can help you get connected.

Finally, students are provided with materials for this class. The resources are VITAL to supporting their growth in the course. Please find a time that you are able to visit the school in order to pick up these materials. Precautions for COVID-19 safety are in place so that you need only step into the lobby of the building to pick up these items.

When you arrive at school, please share with the front desk your name/your students name, the class they are in (Just Words or Wilson Reading System). Someone will give you your assigned materials and you will be all set to go! If there are any conflicts or issues with getting these resources, please let any of us know.

We look forward to getting to know you and your students better this year!

attendance update week 10 9
Biology: We just started Unit 2-Ecology! Ecology is the study of biotic and abiotic factors within an ecosystem. We'll focus on the relationships between living and nonliving factors with heavy consideration to human impact on ecosystems and the planet as a whole. We began this week with a case study reading of the infamous cats of Borneo wherein human intervention on multiple levels had a huge negative impact on the ecosystem of Borneo.

Math: We just finished evaluating expressions. Some students still need to turn in their unit 1 summative. We will be continuing with the distributive property next week.

English I: In English I, we are continuing with our class novel studies. In Mrs. Potter and Mr. Nadeau's classes, they are reading A Song Below Water by Bethany Morrow, a story about two sisters with magical powers and even darker secrets. Mrs. Ziemniak and Ms. Redman's classes, they are reading American Street by Ibi Zoboi, a story about a Haitian teenager's journey as she immigrates to America. We are really encouraging our students to be completing their reading to make the most of the time we spend in class together to discuss and engage with the text.

Freshman Seminar: This week we concentrated on College exposure. Ms. Hill from UIC’s Upward Bound Program spoke to the Freshman class concerning college exposure possibilities. The program offers freshmen an opportunity to experience college life at the UIC campus for a six week program that includes taking college-style courses, dorm living, and excursions to places in and out of Illinois. Ms. Faye, a recruiter from Purdue University Northwest, spoke to the Freshman class about the requirements needed to get accepted to her institution. The students took a virtual tour of the campus and were exposed to their first college discussion of the year. Students weighed in with their thoughts on college acceptance and setting goals for the rest of their freshman year.

Thanks for joining us for the Town Hall last week. We enjoyed celebrating you and gathering as a class. Keep up the good work and make sure you’re in class EVERY day!!

It’s almost Thanksgiving and I know we are all thankful for this break! We hope you will use it to rest, spend time with your family and get away from the computer for a while. I also hope you spend some time acknowledging the indigenous land you reside on and the sordid history of Thanksgiving for Native Americans.
The schedule for the coming week is below. Since it is just a two day week, we will only have an A and a B day on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

We have recently learned that as of now, CPS plans for us to have an in-person PSAT/NMSQT on January 26th. While this is the preliminary SAT, it is an important opportunity to review the skills you learn in school every day! Keep that on your radar and seek out practice opportunities.

Important Dates
• Spirit week: December 14-18th (more info to come)
• Talent Show: December 18th (info to come)
• Winter break: December 18th-January 4th

Happy almost-Thanksgiving, juniors! You’re very close to a much needed break. We hope you will use it to rest, spend time with your family and get away from the computer for a while. Juniors
Thank you for joining the junior team this week for our Quarter 2 Town Hall! We went over some really important information; the presentation from the Town Hall is here, along with the Awards Ceremony! Check it out to review what we covered and pat yourself on the back again if you won an award. Keep an eye on your email for a virtual delivery too!

Most importantly, we have recently learned that as of now, CPS plans for us to have an in-person PSAT/NMSQT on January 26th. While this is the preliminary SAT, it is also a chance to earn scholarships as part of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Being present and trying your best on that test can benefit you in the long run by making college more attainable; it also gives teachers a clear idea of where you are at and in what areas you need more support. The official SAT, as of now, is scheduled for April 13-14.

If you are interested in SAT tutoring, like we discussed in the Town Hall, please fill out the SAT Tutoring Interest form: https://forms.gle/4Ykg9ftR7FvF3Dbt5. This will help teachers plan for tutoring and connect with students who want that extra time.

IB News
Sophomore students are now engaging in their Personal Project! The Personal Project is finished sophomore year and is a project where students either solve a problem or build on their own personal interests. In the past, students have built their own business, created highlight videos, and solved community issues.

Sophomores are meeting with their personal mentor to help them brainstorm ideas for what and how they can be completing the project. Next week they will begin doing their own personal research on their own and in history classes.

Hey there Wildcat!!!! Coach Lopez here.

Alumni Class of 2010 and the Captain of the Girls Swim Team. What can I say about myself other than I am a Driven, hard working, Distinct, Wildcat Woman. Humboldt Park is where I come from and I have always been extremely Proud of that.

This year has been different with so many things. We have had to learn to change and adapt our normal to a new Pandemic style of normal. One of the things that changed was our ability to hang out and be in our Respective Sports with our team mates letting loose after a long day.

I’m hoping that maybe I can help you. I am offering,Swim Club and Swim Team after School.
This is one of the only Sports that we can offer in this Pandemic. There are alot of benefits to Swimming that will help you especially if you’re already an athlete. Swimming helps build your stamina and endurance. Swimming is a total body workout that will transform your body and your mind. Swimming is a team sport with a lot of individual events. This sport will challenge you and build mental focus and your own self discipline all while learning something new and trying something different. If there’s one thing that this sport has taught me in all my years it's definitely mental focus and perseverance.

It's necessary for us to have an outlet. It’s necessary to have a Safe Haven. I am hoping that I can help you with that.
