We are TEN days away from our winter break! Winter break can be a great time to reset and gain back that motivation to see your teacher’s faces in little boxes again! In the next ten school days our theme will be joy! According to a 75 year study at Harvard, “People intrinsically seek joy. And joy connects people more powerfully than almost any other human experience.”

Ways we can find joy during e-learning:
  • Make a joy list (a list of things you do that brings you joy, try to do one thing on the list a day (minimum))
  • Practice kindness (start with yourself and then those in your home, and extend it to your google classrooms)
  • Get some physical activity in your day (during lunch can you take a brisk walk? Get some dancing in?)
  • Be in the moment (try to practice mindfulness and put your body and mind in the moment for each moment of your day)
Attendance:
Last week was a 2 day week so data was sparse. Monday 69% and Tuesday 70% were still far below the 80% goal for the freshmen class. Moving forward, this writer would like to solicit parent/community ideas for attendance incentives. Please submit your ideas to Hector Perez at: Hsperez2@cps.edu

Course Overviews:
English I - New hair, loyalty and integrity. Fabiola is protective of her loved ones, as her adjustment to life in the USA continues to unwind into a drama. We will be looking more in depth at the characters in our novel and diving into the themes. See you at the corner of American Street and Joy Road! -Ms.Redman & Ms.Ziemniak

Math - We're working on combining like terms. Unit 1 Summatives still need to be turned in. We'll be working more with distributive property next week.

Biology - We just started Unit 2: Ecology. The study of biotic and abiotic factors within an ecosystem. We'll focus on the relationships between living and nonliving factors with heavy consideration to human impact on ecosystems and the planet as a whole. We began this week with a case study reading of the infamous cats of Borneo wherein human intervention on multiple levels had a huge negative impact on the ecosystem of Borneo.

Freshman Seminar - The Freshman students are beginning their summative research project. Students have been learning their 1st Amendment rights according to the constitution. This project requires them to research a clause of the 1st Amendment by creating a presentation detailing a court case dealing with their rights. This will allow them to be more conscious of their rights as American citizens while recognizing their civic duties.

Sophomores have been working diligently on their personal project the last few weeks. At this point, almost all students have selected their topics. From students creating a “Why do you love Clemente?” video, to other students making a remote controlled car our mentors are excited to see all the work our students are putting into their project!

As of now, students should have completed their Proposal Form, and Research Notecatcher. Next students will use December to write their own rubrics that will show how they want their projects to be evaluated. All of December and January, students will begin creating their final projects being due January 22nd.

If your student needs help or has any questions they can reach out to their mentor, or MYP Coordinator Adam Hoover at achoover@cps.edu

Juniors, we are just a few weeks away from winter break! That also means you are just a few weeks away from the end of the semester, which concludes on February 4th. In the meantime, make sure you are keeping yourself up to date on your grades by check Aspen and emailing with teachers about revisions and missing assignments.

Additionally, CPS plans for us to have an in-person PSAT/NMSQT on January 26th. While this is the preliminary SAT, it is also a chance to earn scholarships as part of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Being present and trying your best on that test can benefit you in the long run by making college more attainable; it also gives teachers a clear idea of where you are at and in what areas you need more support. The official SAT, as of now, is scheduled for April 13-14.

If you are interested in SAT tutoring, like we discussed in the Town Hall, please fill out the SAT Tutoring Interest form: https://forms.gle/4Ykg9ftR7FvF3Dbt5. This will help teachers plan for tutoring and connect with students who want that extra time.

IB News
Congratulations to senior Noemi Lopez for being a semi-finalist in designing the new Cook County Flag. On the last days in March when the school was still open, Noemi submitted a flag design as Cook County is looking for a new design. Now, she is one of 25 finalists in Cook County and will meet with professional artists to revise and edit her flag for final submission. If she advances to the next stage, she will be one of the final 5! Congratulations Noemi!
