Congratulations on finishing your first semester as a freshman here at Clemente! We have now finished our first week of semester two, you all have a clean slate and can bring a whole new energy to your classes.

As many teachers have often said, when we were freshmen, we have no idea how we would perform through this pandemic! We are blown away by your effort and resilience. Keep up the good work and continue to advocate for yourself! -Ms.Redman

Welcome back to 2nd semester! Hopefully there has been time to reflect and consider the 1st semester and how it went for you individually in every way (academically, emotionally, attendance, etc…). There is no attendance data for this first week so I want to take this opportunity to applaud every hard working student and open up a conversation on attendance as it links to academic success. I’ve asked an exceptional student to join the conversation on attendance sharing a student perspective.

Hi, My name is Michelle Hughes

This year, I am a freshman at Clemente. Remote learning has been a little rough transitioning from elementary school to online high school. Despite the challenges of remote learning, I earned a 4.0 GPA during this first semester of school. One of the biggest reasons for my success was in my commitment to showing up to online school every day. I work hard to show up to class on time, take notes in between classes, and ask questions so I can better understand things. Keeping good attendance is very important for other students and me because those things will and can help you improve your grades.

I want to thank Michelle for her perspective and experience. It is undeniable, there is a strong correlation between those students who attend regularly and those who achieve great academic success. In the spirit of reflection, consider your attendance and if necessary, improve your attendance and finish out your freshman year strong!!

Being a high school student these past few months hasn’t gone at all as I expected. I didn’t get to experience special events such as my eighth-grade graduation, my first homecoming, or even my first day at school. We’ve all had to adapt to a new way of not only schooling but life. It’s been hard to stay motivated, happy, and on top of things but fortunately, my teachers have helped guide me through it all. They have made what most might expect to be a difficult and chaotic school environment, into a comfortable and understanding one. Whether it is getting a daily greeting from a teacher, starting off with some music, or doing a raffle in class, I constantly feel acknowledged and supported.
I look forward to participating in classes like gym and dance because they help me stay motivated, as well as physically and mentally fit. During these times I feel it is important for everyone to recognize that you aren’t alone and that we are in this together. I am optimistic about the future and hopeful that we get the high school experience our parents were able to get. I am really looking forward to getting the chance to meet my teachers and my new classmates in person rather than through a screen. I also look forward to attending games and other fun school events, just as I am sure the rest of us are.

Welcome to Semester 2, sophomores!
By this point, you know the drill and are seasoned Wildcats. We hope you and your families are staying safe and warm during this time.

Curious about what’s going on in remote classes? Check out this blurb from one of our awesome, new Wildcat family members, Mr. Texeira!

Do students actually have rights in school? Does freedom of speech really mean that we can say WHATEVER we want? What is it like being a teenager in another part of the country right now? For the tenth grade Constitution Unit, we wanted to shake things up a bit, so we decided to go an entirely different and exciting direction these next few weeks with a project-based learning plan in partnership with Young Women’s College Prep Charter School in Rochester, New York. We are in an unprecedented time in our history due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The concept of "community" is transforming as we spend most of our time online or physically distanced from others. In this project, students are exploring what community means to Generation Z. Through their work, Clemente sophomores will help others see what community looks like from young people's eyes in Rochester and Chicago while also learning about the United States Constitution and democracy. They are practising productive discourse by examining how the politics of the pandemic has exposed inequality and resiliency in both cities. In addition to Flipgrid, Sli.Do, and other creative platforms used to share information with one another, the class project has an Instagram, a website, and the teachers hosted a “meet and greet” for students in both cities to meet with their partners on this project on the other side of the Great Lakes. Our final product will be a Humans of New York-type photo journal series in which students are documenting their stories locally and nationally. Stay tuned for the great work ahead!

Driver’s Ed Update:
It's the second semester and that means Driver Education has begun! Please be sure to check in with your child about Driver Education lessons and making the 30-hour classroom requirement. Passing Driver Education is a Clemente graduation requirement. I (Mr. Tolene) have been teaching Driver Education classroom here at Clemente for five years and can help with any questions you may have. Here is my email address: mktolene@cps.edu.

In Driver Education, we will go over Driving with low risk, texting and driving, alcohol/drugs, and many other topics to prepare our young people to get behind the wheel legally and safely.

See you on the road Wildcats!

Hi juniors! SAT tutoring continued this week! If you are interested in joining in the coming weeks, make sure you are signed up on the Junior GL Google Classroom using the Join code on the flyer below. We will get together on the Junior GL Classroom Meet link. You will also receive a direct calendar invite each week to serve as a reminder! Many weeks will have more than one tutor so you can choose your focus area if you know you’d like to work on one section in particular.

Looking a little further ahead, our Quarter 3 Town Hall is coming up next week on February 18th at 2:45! We are getting into an important time of your junior year and you may have questions. If you would like to submit a question ahead of time for the Q&A student forum section, feel free to submit one using this form! It is anonymous and the team will do their best to come with information and an answer!

Finally, if you are starting to think about your plans for the summer, check out this collection of summer programs that are open to CPS juniors! Physics students will explore this in the coming week but there are lots of experiences to investigate. Feel free to dig into different options that
