As we wrap up 2020, here are some ways to spread joy this week:

-Tell someone aloud when they do something that makes you happy
-Compliment a student in class on their participation
-Say thank you when possible
-Volunteer your time to help others

Hi Sophomores! We are nearing a well-deserved Winter Break, but before we go, check out some updates on come of your courses and sophomore requirements:

Personal Project:

As of now, students should have completed their Proposal Form, and Research Notecatcher. Next students will use December to write their own rubrics that will show how they want their projects to be evaluated. All of December and January, students will begin creating their final projects being due January 22nd. If your student needs help or has any questions they can reach out to their mentor, or MYP Coordinator Adam Hoover at achoover@cps.edu

English: Do you ever feel like you don’t understand the music your student listens to? Ask them to tell you about their research project they are working on in English class right now! For the past several weeks sophomores have been researching a musician of their choice to defend them as a true innovator. Paper topics range from Polo G, to Journey, to Ariana Grande, to The Temptations!

PE: We are about 4 weeks into beginner yoga for teens and we are getting stronger together mentally and physically. Looking ahead we will be studying sexual health and wellness.

Juniors, we are just a week away from winter break! That also means you are just a few weeks away from the end of the semester, which ends on February 4th. This weekend, a suggestion to all juniors is to email any teachers that you need to check in with about grades. Now is a great time to start any revisions you need rather than waiting until the last minute. Need some motivation to get those grades going in the right direction? According to Prep Scholar, while all years of high school are important, colleges look closely at your junior year grades. Why? Check it out below…

“Because you want to demonstrate your full capabilities, 11th grade should be the hardest course load year on your transcript. It should most closely approximate a college course load, so that colleges can get a sense of how you would handle that level of work. So, my advice is to take the highest level courses that you can reasonably handle (meaning get a B or higher in). Remember, this is the time to really push yourself, especially in classes that are your strengths, that you are passionate about, or that you can see yourself pursuing in college.” (https://blog.prepscholar.com/which-year-of-high-school-is-most-important-for-college-applications)
As mentioned in previous newsletters and in an email to juniors, the Junior Team is planning for additional SAT tutoring, based on student interest. If you are interested in SAT tutoring after school, like discussed in the Town Hall, please fill out the SAT Tutoring Interest form: https://forms.gle/4Ykg9ftR7FvF3Dbt5. This will help teachers plan for tutoring and connect with students who want that extra time. Thank you to those of you who have already completed it!

Senior Wildcats,

As we close 2020, we want to thank you for hanging in there with us during the first part of this school year. We have 1 week until Winter Break. We challenge you to give it your best! This year has been a wild ride. Let’s all make the best of it this upcoming week.

When we return, we will have about 1 month until the end of the semester. What does that mean? This is the semester that is going to count towards your credits to graduate. Are you passing the classes you need? If you are struggling, use this week to connect with supports to help you succeed. Have you completed your applications and FAFSA? If not, use this week to really focus on that!

If you have been missing from class lately, please communicate with your teachers or counselor. We are here to support you, and we know this holiday season has NOT been easy on Clemente family.

IB News
Congratulations to senior Noemi Lopez for being a semi-finalist in designing the new Cook County Flag. On the last days in March when the school was still open, Noemi submitted a flag design as Cook County is looking for a new design. Now, she is one of 25 finalists in Cook County and will meet with professional artists to revise and edit her flag for final submission. If she advances to the next stage, she will be one of the final 5! Congratulations Noemi!
