Hi Sophomores! I hope you enjoy your well-deserved Winter Break. Take the time to rest, do something creative, recuperate, and manifest for 2021.

Check out what our sophomores have been up to these past couple weeks!

Personal Project:

Science: In science students have been learning about atomic structure and how to find out the number of protons electrons and neutrons of different elements. We have been focusing on the element Lead (Pb) in the last week and we learned about the Flint Water Crisis and how the crisis occurred, how the community came together to find a solution and we have been discussing if we all have a right to clean water and if so, whose responsibility is it to make sure we do.

US History: In US history, sophomores are working on creating a virtual museum about a local indigenous tribe. Students are completing research and analyzing art, objects and historical documents!

Personal Project:
As of now, students should have completed their Proposal Form, and Research Notecatcher. Next students will use December to write their own rubrics that will show how they want their projects to be evaluated. All of December and January, students will begin creating their final projects being due January 22nd. If your student needs help or has any questions they can reach out to their mentor, or MYP Coordinator Adam Hoover at achoover@cps.edu

Important Dates
  • Winter break: December 18th-January 4th
  • End of Semester 1: February 4th
  • Academic Approach PSAT (9&10): Feb 23-24

You have arrived at winter break! Your teachers recognize how hard you all have worked in these 15 online weeks of school. The junior team wants to wish all students and families a Happy Holidays that will hopefully be filled with rest and rejuvenation. We advise staying away from the computer screen and Google Classroom for a bit :)

With winter break comes the end of the semester, which is on February 4th. While progress reports are coming out this week, the end of the semester will sneak up on you. While you may not want to reach out to your teachers over the break, you can always plan on emailing them when we return. Stuck on how to ask for help? Feel free to use the template below as a way to proactively communicate with your teachers:

Subject: Improving my grade

Hi Mr./Ms. _____________________ , (add your teacher’s name).

Before the semester ends, I wanted to reach out about my grade, which is currently _____% (insert your grade here) and see if there was anything I can do to improve it. I looked in Aspen and saw that I am missing ________________________ (fill this part in with whatever assignments you are missing!). Can I make this assignment up or is it better to focus on a different assignment?

Please let me know what I can do. I appreciate it!

Thanks,
_______________ (your name)

Feel free to edit this as you need to but this is one way to communicate with your teachers if you need some help reaching out and asking for support.

Finally, as mentioned in previous newsletters, the Junior Team is planning for additional SAT tutoring, based on student interest. If you are interested in SAT tutoring after school, like discussed in the Town Hall, please fill out the SAT Tutoring Interest form: https://forms.gle/4Ykg9ftR7FvF3Dbt5. This will help teachers plan for tutoring and connect with students who want that extra time. Thank you to those of you who have already completed it!

Happy Holidays, Senior Wildcats!

We all hope you enjoy your time off in the next couple of weeks. Please take this time to rest and spend (safe) time with those you love. Give yourself some grace. Make up work if you are able. Senior events may still happen over break! Check your email for impromptu movie days/nights, etc.

2021 is YOUR YEAR! Let’s make it count!

Happy Holidays & Happy New Year!
