My goodness, did it snow or what this week! With the majority of us hunkered down in our homes, we still had a great week here via virtual learning. Personalities are shining via remote learning, and students are getting more comfortable sharing and unmuting. We are loving it! Make sure you all check the calendars and keep up to date with which block schedule day it is! When you are not in class, we miss you! Keep up the good work! -Ms. Redman

Attendance

There was no attendance data posted for last week, but speaking with teachers on the freshman team, attendance appears to be down for second semester. The attendance team headed by Hector Perez has been working on incentive ideas and is still soliciting ideas from parents, students, and teachers. Again if you have any ideas on incentive ideas for virtual learning and second semester, please reach out to us. There is a strong correlation between attendance and academic success!

Academics

Being a freshman at Clemente has been a challenging but rewarding experience. It is definitely way different than elementary school. Some of the biggest differences are that there is a lot more work, high school requires me to be more responsible for figuring out the assignments for myself, and there are more teachers I have to communicate with.

The amount of work was shocking at first. I’ve never had to stay up late to finish my assignments before. In elementary school I never had to stress out about finishing an essay in English class, figuring out Algebra equations, or making sure my Civics presentation was perfect.

Luckily, I have really nice teachers who are always willing to help me. Math class is a perfect example of this. After three months in this class, I found myself with an F. I thought it would be like elementary school, where I didn’t have to put in much effort and still pass with a good grade. Instead, I realized that I had to attend class every day, ask questions when I didn’t understand the material, and many times ask the teacher to meet in break out rooms for one-on-one tutoring. After doing all those things, I managed to bring my grade up to a B before grades were due for the semester. I was really proud of myself for that.

I am starting to understand what it takes to be a successful high school student. The first semester was definitely a learning experience for me, and I’m starting to understand the responsibilities every high school student must take on. I’m not saying it’s always going to be perfect, but with hard work, dedication, and trust in my teachers, I know I can succeed in high school.

Thank you to all my teachers who work so hard to make sure we all succeed.

Hi juniors,

If the snow is getting you down, one way to start feeling a little cheerier is to think about summer! The summer before your senior year can be really important because, along with strong SAT scores and other admissions requirements, having a resume with different kinds of experience on it can be vital to getting into the college of your choice. If you’re interested in trade school or going straight into the workforce, the same applies; getting work experience or participating in a program during the summer can be a huge resume booster! If you are starting to think about your plans for the summer, check out this collection of summer programs that are open to CPS juniors! Physics students explored this in the coming week but there are lots of experiences to investigate. Feel free to dig into different options that interest you!

Additionally, we held our Quarter 3 Town Hall this week. We covered a lot of information about the SAT, school reopening, sports and much more. The team has condensed the info and any links you may need into a quick one page overview. Check it out here. The same document was sent directly to your email as well. We also said that you would have a chance to shout out your classmates and friends. If you want to submit a shoutout for a junior, fill out this form to have it shared in the Clemente Newsletter in the coming weeks.

Finally, we will remind you until April 13th rolls around. SAT tutoring is weekly on Wednesdays at 3:30! We will get together on the Junior GL Classroom Meet link. You will also receive a direct calendar invite each week to serve as a reminder! Many weeks will have more than one tutor so you can choose your focus area if you know you’d like to work on one section in particular.

From the Desk of Mr. Crawley:
A couple of FAFSA notes for you:
  1. Don’t forget to follow up from the FAFSA Verification workshop last week and put the colleges that you are interested in on your FAFSA so that they can begin to create your Financial aid package. And also, find your portal login information from the colleges that you have been accepted in so that we can start getting into those portals this week. We will be in class for part 2 of the FAFSA Verification workshop this week so we want you ready to attack!!
  1. For those that have not completed the FAFSA, you still have a chance to receive the MAP grant, which is almost 6,000 in free money for school, BUT, your time is running out because when the MAP money is gone, its gone and YOU WON’T GET IT THIS YEAR. So let’s make sure that we can get that FAFSA done ASAP. I (Crawley) am available to do Google conferences & even home visits this week to help you finish, I just need to know that you need help. Please email me with any concerns or questions (mlcrawley@cps.edu). Come on ya’ll let’s get it done! I may start pulling you guys out of class to help get this done also.

What’s up, Wildcats? Coach López here.

As many of you know, I am the head swim coach for Boys and Girls Swimming here at Clemente, and I need your help.

I am trying to gather information about our school community's water safety and aquatic sports knowledge. Currently, Black and Brown students ages 5-18 in the U.S. are less likely to have received any form of exposure to aquatic safety or aquatic sports and instruction. As a result, swimming is a sport enjoyed mostly by white students. USA Swimming wants to see more participation in the sport from students of all races and ethnicities, and YOU can help me make that happen.

Can you take this one-minute survey, so that I can better serve you and our community? With what I learn, it is my goal to create aquatic programming that is equitable and accessible for all students. I believe that Clemente can have the best aquatic programming in Chicago!
