Clemente Students Become Actors

Last week, the freshman class began a unique theatre unit called American Mosaic in collaboration with the American Theatre Company. All freshman students are participating in this unit in their English class by reading the play Sons of the Prophet by Stephen Karam. Each class period will rehearse and perform one scene from the play. Some students will be actors and other students will be part of the production crew. Together, all classes will perform their scenes together in a “mosaic” performance of the play on Saturday, February 22nd from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the American Theatre Company in North Center. The following week on Tuesday, February 25th, students will take a field trip to see a professional matinee performance of the play on the same stage that they performed on a few days before.

Sons of the Prophet is about a Lebanese-American family that struggles with the loss of a parent, an ailing uncle, and other recurring healthcare problems. The two brothers attempt to keep their family together after suffering an unusual number of personal losses. From the author of Speech & Debate and co-author of Columbinus, which Clemente students performed last year, comes this hysterically funny and deeply moving tale of life, love, and loss in working-class America. This play was the winner of the 2012 Drama Critics’ Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play, and a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Families, friends, and community members are encouraged to attend the student production on Saturday, Feb. 22nd!
