In the General Music classroom, students experience a wide variety of music through performance, composition, listening, and dictation. As a part of the IB program, students are required to create one original composition per quarter. The original composition allows students to directly apply the formal music training they have received in music theory and piano technique. Each quarter, the composition requirements increase in difficulty and complexity. Currently in the third quarter, students are working on their third composition(Comp 3). Their Comp 3 consists of a 12 measure melody with chord accompaniment. Once the student has finished the composition, they must also be able to perform it for their final assessment. Students are generally in the piano lab three days a week and are encouraged to practice 20-30 minutes each day in addition to their other assignments and projects.
