Exploring the Impact the Supreme Court has on Politics
How does the Supreme Court affect us? Do their decisions always reflect American values? Clemente’s seniors explored these questions as they researched and debated the Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission.
What started as a controversy over a group advertising a political film ended up changing the laws governing how federal campaigns are funded. But are free speech and campaign donations the same thing? Should corporations be allowed to spend freely?
Seniors used online “boards” with links and videos regarding the case to conduct research on the Court’s decision and its effects on campaign financing. As they researched, students used online tools to take notes and communicate with their instructor. This included receiving feedback on work and making improvements.
Once finished with their research, students wrote argumentative essays explaining their individual views on the Court’s decision and whether or not they believed the laws were aligned with the values many Americans hold dear. Through this project, students were able to refine their critical thinking and writing skills as well as develop technological skills they will utilize throughout their college and professional lives. In addition, they were able to explore complex political ideas and recognize the effects they have on their individual lives and freedoms.
