Fantasy Coffins
The Art 1 students are learning about various cultures’ funerary traditions and the connections to our own beliefs. Students are currently exploring the artistic qualities and meaning behind Ghanaian fantasy coffins. Fantasy coffins are visual representations of a deceased individual’s interests and life. The non-traditional coffins are tailored to be specific for each individual.
Students used this inspiration to create their own miniature versions of fantasy coffins. Each student used a model cut out of a typical coffin to begin their fantasy coffin construction. They reflected on their own lives, personalities, goals and accomplishments and then added items and drawings to their models in order to create a visual representation of themselves.
