HOW IT FEELS TO BE A SENIOR AT THIS POINT IN THE YEAR!
By: Uquasia Brown, Senior @ Clemente High School
I’ve known since 3rd grade that the year of 2014-15 would be my senior year of high school. Surprisingly, even back then I didn’t have any misconceptions or misguided notions about what the year would look like. I knew that I would have to work hard, apply myself, and stay on task so that I could graduate on time. My family and my elementary school counselors always applied pressure on me to excel academically because they knew that going to high school was a big deal, and continuing on to college was an even bigger deal.
Let’s fast forward to senior year at Roberto Clement. Wow! Yay! Hooray! Oh, wait, I still have to get good grades, pass all of my classes, and maintain an 85% attendance rate. As a senior at Clemente, it is mandatory to apply to at least 5 colleges or universities. This was a totally new experience for me. I didn’t know anything about applying to colleges and completing FASFA. I didn’t realize the amount of work it requires to accomplish these tasks. Thanks to my persistent counselor exposing me to many career options, and thanks to my caring teachers who are always encouraging me to go after my dreams, become a better thinker, and teaching me the required lessons and skills to prepare me to attend college or the job market, I am now confident that I will attend college and study Botany or do something like working with genetics. I know it won’t be easy, but I also know that Clemente has equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful. I am eager to continue on to the end of senior year, and I am positively looking forward to graduation and prom.
