IB Conference of the Americas

[dropcap style=”1″]In early July, fifteen Clemente staff members attended the IB Conference of the Americas in Washington, D.C. This year’s conference theme was “Ways of Knowing,” which encompassed a wide range of learning opportunities. Teachers attended sessions on visual arts, math, differentiation, service-learning, unit-planning, assessment and grading, school improvement, inclusive classrooms, technology integration, learning through games, international mindedness, school leadership, IB updates and more! In addition to the formal sessions, Clemente teachers had an opportunity to meet and share ideas with IB educators from around the globe. The team left DC with many pages of notes and several exciting ideas for next year’s instruction.[/dropcap]

Four teachers who arrived early participated in the “Ways of Growing” service-learning pre-conference, focused on exploring food security. Ms. Baxter, Ms. Hernandez, Ms. Kelley and Ms. Kephart volunteered at Crossroads Farmers Market in Takoma Park, MD. This market was the first in the state to accept SNAP, a model that has since been adopted around the nation. On the day of service, the market served 360 WIC, SNAP & SENIOR families through the Fresh Checks program, distributing $2,985 in Fresh Checks to eligible customers (which doubles the value of money spent on farmer’s market produce, increasing buying power for low-income shoppers towards fresh, healthy and local foods).
