Scholarships 2016 by Kaitlyn Duff
It is now January and many of our wildcats have completed the college application process and are now working on choosing and applying for scholarships. Wildcat seniors must apply for at least three scholarships in addition to their five college applications. However, Wildcats are encouraged to apply for more than three scholarships to ensure additional monies for their first year away from Clemente. Our seniors understand that without the financial assistance that scholarships and financial aid provide, their dreams of post-secondary success would sometimes be out of their reach.
Some of our seniors have applied to the University Scholarship for Illinois State University. Illinois State University is located in Normal, Illinois, and is home to the Redbirds. The qualifications for this scholarship are a 25 on the ACT and a GPA of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The award for this scholarship is determined by the size of the applicant pool, but has a minimum of $6,000. Receiving a scholarship of this size would help our students immensely on their journeys to receiving a bachelor’s degree. Completing this scholarship has been an exhausting journey because there are multiple short answer questions and four essay questions. Almost all of the questions are based on involvement in the community and the work force. Clemente provides our students with an array of volunteer experiences, so our students are able to relate and answer the application questions without hesitation. For those applicants that are denied this scholarship, they are automatically given the Redbird Academic scholarship. For that scholarship, you are given $1,000-$4,000 per year, and the qualifications remain the same as the University scholarship. This scholarship is automatically renewed if the student keeps their GPA at a minimum of 2.75.
