On Tuesday September 6th, the Clemente Wildcats Boys Varsity soccer team hosted conference rivals, Kelvyn Park Panthers, at the Humboldt Park Allstate Turf field. This marked the first game of the season for the Wildcats. Clemente began the game with new freshmen goalie, Kelvin Aguirre, displaying some of his skills as he punched away a goal scoring opportunity during the second minute of the game. After both teams settled in, the Wildcats slowly began to assume control of the game and kept possession of the ball. Junior, Miguel Sanchez, executed a great play and dribbled past two defenders and scored for the Wildcats. With the early lead, the Wildcats continued to be composed as they moved up the field to create more goal scoring opportunities. The Panthers were able to score after overcoming some of the Wildcat defenders, tying up the game at 1-1. Right before the halftime whistle, senior captain, Arnold Rodriguez, was awarded a penalty shot and scored to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
The second half started with both teams taking risks and pressing high, which led to a back and forth game, with many goal scoring opportunities for both teams. Kelvyn Park was able to capitalize on defensive miscues from the Wildcats and scored two quick goals to start the half. With a 3-2 lead, the Panthers’ forwards continued their high-pressure tactic for the duration of the second half. The Wildcats unfortunately could not create the positive momentum necessary and allowed six goals in the second half. The match ended with a final score of 7-2 in favor of the Kelvyn Park Panthers. The Wildcats look to turn their season around as they head south to face another conference rival, Phoenix Military Academy, this Thursday.
Next game: Clemente vs. Phoenix Military Academy at 4:30pm on Thursday, September 8th, at Douglas Park.
