What is International Baccalaureate?

International Baccalaureate (IB) is a world-wide educational programme that prepares students for university level work, while also developing them as critical thinkers and active participants in their local and global communities. Beyond academic preparation, the IB’s mission is to create a better world through education. This philosophy is captured in the Mission Statement of IB:

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. ”

This mission is also translated into a set of outcomes for students, encapsulated in the IB Learner Profile.

The IB Programme strives to develop students who are:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Balanced
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Principled
  • Reflective

Further information about IB can be found at their website: www.ibo.org .

What is Clemente’s status as an IB school?

Roberto Clemente Community Academy has received support from our local community, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and the Board of Education to become one of Chicago’s new Wall-to-Wall IB Schools. We are applying for candidacy this April, and will admit our first cohort of freshmen in Fall 2013. We aim to be fully authorized to offer the Diploma Programme in 2015, allowing these students to participate when they reach their junior year. During their first two years, students will engage in pre-IB coursework modeled after the Middle Years Programme.

Does this mean that Clemente is no longer a neighborhood school?

Absolutely not! While we do have students applying to enroll at Clemente from outside our attendance boundaries, we are still admitting all neighborhood students would have been projected to Clemente. Our goal is to be a comprehensive neighborhood high school, able to serve all of the diverse students in our community. Both neighborhood and application students have the ability to enter the honors track in 9th grade, preparing them for the IB Diploma Programme. Additionally, we meet the needs of all students by offering multiple pathways besides the Diploma Programme in 11th and 12th grade. The principles of the IB Learner Profile and curriculum framework will infuse all classes at Clemente, ensuring that every student benefits.

What will “Wall-to-Wall” IB look like at Clemente?

All 9th and 10th grade students will participate in the IB Middle Years Programme, consisting of 8 subject areas, community service, and the Personal Project. An honors option is available for those who are ready for accelerated coursework in preparation for the IB Diploma Programme.

Slide

During their sophomore year, students will choose from various pathways for completing their education at Clemente:

Diploma Programme: a comprehensive and challenging pre-university program for academically advanced and highly motivated students in grades 11 and 12. Students will take 6 courses, as well as the IB Core: a Theory of Knowledge class, the Extended Essay, and the Community, Service & Action project.

IB Career Certificate: a pathway that offers career training in either Culinary Arts or Radio & Television Broadcasting, while providing the opportunity to take 2 Diploma Programme courses and the IB Core.

IB Subject Certificates can be attained by students who take individual Diploma Courses and test successfully at the end of their senior year.

CTE with IB Core allows students to study Culinary Arts or Radio & Television Broadcasting, while also engaging in 1 or more IB Core experiences.

Why should I choose Clemente for my education?

The faculty and staff at Clemente have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to student support, exhibited in our 94% freshman on-track rate and 0.6% drop-out rate in 2011-2012. Clemente was one of the top 10 schools district-wide on both of these measures.

Our matrix of student support ensures that everyone enrolled at Clemente receives the academic and socio-emotional services needed to realize their full potential. From our quarterly college tours to tutoring in designated grade-level Learning Centers, students at Clemente are supported in their high school experience and transition to postsecondary education. As a comprehensive neighborhood high school, we also offer a wide array of extracurricular activities and sports programs, rounding out our students’ experiences.
